gas smell!!???

i recently bought my 2002 wrx and it has been great, but a few days ago the CEL came up,and since then there has been a strong smell of gas in my car i went to autozone and the codes said that it was either a faulty fuel cap or a evap system leak. my cap seems to fit just fine so i started looking under the hood. right next to the altornator there is a circular thing that has two hoses comming off of it, i got to looking closer and noticed that on the back side the hose was apart, there use to be a blue plastic T that held the hoses together, but i guess it got old and cracked apart, im planning on fixing it this afternoon, but i was just curious if this is why my CEL came on and if this is why is smells like gas, im pretty new to all of this but i am slowly learning!!
thanks, Daymon

If Im not mistaken the EVAP system is in the back of the car, underneath on the side the gas cap is on. There are several hoses/connections there to check out. Not sure about the engine side of the car tho.

Yeah I get the gas smell also. Only comes around in the cold months but when it starts getting warm out it goes away. I've dealt with it for the last few years with no issues so I wouldnt lose any sleep over it. Most 02 owners get the smell so your not alone.
Hope this helps ya.

Thanks it is pretty cold here right now and I was to the point to where I couldn't use my heater because it would make my car smell like a gas tank, but after I replaced all those hoses I haven't smelt it since !!

Yeah mine reeks like gas every mourning when I warm her up. I just crack my window for a few minutes while I drive. I notice if you put the vent on recirc. it kinda keeps the smell down a bit. At least the cold season is almost done though!

2002-'03 Subaru Impreza WRX Recalled for Fire Hazard

Subaru dealers will replace the fuel line for free. The recall is expected to begin sometime in December. Subaru owners can contact the company at 800-782-2783.

Unless you guys LIKE the smell?? hahahaha

I don't think it's free anymore, but talk to the service advisor, he may just give you the pieces and then you can do it yourself at home.
