Finally Installed My VF30 Turbo

I finally finished up installing my VF30 today... I already had some injectors, but I still have to install my big tmic.. unfortunately, I ran out of daylight

I know the Cobb 2.5 doesn't call for a bigger tmic, but I'm installing one anyway. This one is only slightly bigger than the STi intercooler, and an exact Perrin replica.

Ran it down the road a few times, and my God man, that thing pulls hard all the way to redline (which is 7250 with Cobb EM). Now I do have to say the lag is definitely noticeable - the VF30 flows as much as the VF34, but spools slower b/c it's not ball bearing. Boost comes in around 3600+rpm, vs. the stocker at ~3k... But where the TD04 runs out of air, the VF30 shines brilliantly. The pull was insane from mid to top end and this is all w/o a protune yet. Got one planned for Saturday the 29th at SOG performance in Gwinnett, GA. I'll make a thread about it...I'm really anxious to see these torque numbers.

Some pics for ya:

Oooh yeah I'm boost junkie alright... The only one I would have preferred (with my current mods) would have been the VF34 due to the ball bearing and quicker spool, but I couldn't find one for what I could get the 30 for. Anyway, I am quite pleased.

Yeah, I'd be REAL curious to see what kind of numbers you pull with a protune. I'm actually looking around for some insight on a turbo upgrade. I have an 06 WRX and I was looking at a VF34 with a TMIC. People say to MAYBE get an Sti turbo(VF39), but if the VF34 does better than why not??? But yeah, keep us posted

I was originally gonna go with the VF39, but really knew I wouldn't be happy with it. While it is an upgrade over the TD04, it's not a big jump. STi owners everywhere complain of how it (VF39) runs out of breath in the upper rpms, as well as cracking around the exhaust housing. So I looked at getting a 34, but happened to get such a deal on the 30 I couldn't pass it up. Both the VF30 & 34 are larger than the 39 and have better power potential. I would look at getting a VF34 or better for your 06. I'll post up some #s as soon as I can.

A little port/polish on the turbine inlet could get you some quicker spool up.It's fairly easy to do.But also ditching the factory EBC and using the GM one from a Syclone/Typhoon or the Perrin EBCS will yeild you faster spool up and better top end boost control.Unfortunatley you have to tune for the new solenoid.

I thought about a port job, and may still do it in the near future...as for the ebc/solenoid, that's something to consider...I haven't had a tune yet, but will soon, so I may look into getting one. Thanks for the info.

Congrats on the turbo! VF series are very popular. You guys who are still shopping though should check out the 16G. Unlike the VF series, they're fully rebuildable, a bit cheaper, and give greater numbers.

04 STi 16G powered lagless fun
