Driving advice

What do you guys think is the best way to drive your car for max. accel? Do you almost redline and then slam it into gear? shift after peak boost and then ........ and on and on.

shifting right before the power falls off is probably your best bet.

Smooth and quick with the gears is way faster than jamming them in and dropping the clutch...that is how you break the transmission.

The key shift point is right around 6500rpms. And +1 to what Robby said about "how to" shift.

yup. ive said it before. the speed at which you change gears under acceleration is not that big of a deal. it might sound like a big deal, having the car essentially without acceleration for two seconds while changing gears. until you factor in the inertia 2500lbs has doing 30 mph.

Thats the biggest thing many dont realize, what nuggest said, inertia. The car doesnt stop jut cause you left of the accelerator and disengaged gears for maybe two seconds.

You'll want to shift just before your boost level starts to taper off.

thanks for the advice guys.

Hey "nuggets" i thought that these cars (02-03) weighed about 4000lbs. I'm pretty sure thats what the sticker on the door jam says. ....but still, yeah, i understand about inertia.

i think it varies by car and the kind of gears and the tune is also a factor. i know on my sti being stock, i got better times when i shifted at redline.

so try different rpms next time u go to the track.

Thats the GVWR which is the weight of the car plus max cargo.

The wrx weighs in right aroun 3000 lbs.

Shifting Tips Here is some good reading.
The best way to find shift points is on a dyno. You woll need to run each gear to redline and see where the power drops. I most cases the power drop before redline. Like stated above the mods and tune you have will make a difference.

heck an svx doens t weigh that much although its pretty heavy at 3600 lbs. my gl sedan weighs 2800 lbs.

you must be referring the GVWR on the door jamb, the maximum loaded capacity of the car+fuel+passengers+cargo

i'm just guessing, but a 2nd gen impreza weighs probably about 3200 lbs

the weight in the door jam is usualy the gross weight. you want curb weight.
