Does a simple K&N Filter make the car sound like it has a BOV?

I bought a used 2004 WRX that already has a K&N panel filter. I am getting alot of intake noise, but the big thing is that when I give the car a lot of throttle and then let off, it sounds like it has a aftermarket BOV valve. I checked and it doesn't, it's factory, plus the sound is coming from around the airbox? Lastly I've owned a 2002 WRX that had just the factory filter and it didn't make that noise. The dealer says Subaru made a change on the 2004 and up that causes it to be louder than the 2002 I had?

Huh??? You will get a little more noise since you removed the heavy/ dense factory filter. Im not aware of any change as far as the 04 goes. There were some minor changes in the engine bay, but nothing that would sound different to my knowledge.

The intake silencer could possibly be removed.

+1

with the k&n your car will be louder if you really strain and listen for it. however for it to sound like theirs an aftermarket BOV on the car is a bit to much, i would check and see the status of that silencer!

I'll check and see if the silencer is missing.

If the Silencer was removed would the K & N be louder than the stock filter?

I found that I noticed the BOV the most when I took out my silencer. I installed my drop in K&N a few days later, and didnt really notice any additional sound.

Its getting cooler where I live, and the sound of the turbo, and BOV just gets more profound the cooler it gets. I love it.

Um... describe the "bov" sound. I believe there's a miscommunication problem here. Removing the silencer OR changing the filter should never make noise that resembles a blow off valve.

If it's a hissing, whinning, or ticking noise when you accelerate. Then that's the sound you hear from removing the silencer. If you hear the sound AND you have a loss of power, you didn't put your stock airbox back together correctly.

This is what I have, When accelerating I hear the sound of the intake, then when if I push hard on the accelerator and move up the rpm's I get a psst sound ( like the airbrakes on a large truck) when I suddenly let off the throttle. It's pretty loud. I can hear it over the radio. IT also sounds as if it's coming from the airbox? It won't do it except under load, and can't be duplicated out of gear and sitting when reving the motor.

i removed the silencer off my car and i get the same noise. i think it is just the pressure in the intake getting realeased when you get off the throttle. not completely sure though. my friends 3000gtvr4 has a k&n cai and it makes the same noise

I have a K&N filter and I removed the silencer today. I can't hear the bov. The intake sounds nice but no bov noise.

Thats because it has a bov. WRX's engines already come with a bov
