Difference and problems with 2008 vs 2009 Subaru WRX?

Hello,

I am currently looking into purchasing either a 2008 or 2009 Subaru WRX. I have been doing some research and looking at reviews. What are some of the major differences between the 08 and 09?

Also I read that the 08 has more problems then the 2009? Is this true and if it is what are the common problems seen in 08 and not the 09? I am debating between purchasing a used 08 or 09 with high miles but a lower cost or pay a little more and get one with low miles?

Thank you.

If you have read about the differences then you know. One of the biggest differences was the turbo/HP output of the car. Around a 40HP bump. Also if you read that the 08 had problems, that Subaru resolved them, or fixed them under warranty at the time. If one of those 08s has made it 4 yrs without a problem, then it wasnt one of the ones that was bad.

7/31 New 2009 WRX details announced. It's official, and the first 09 will be shown at the Los Angeles X Games July 31.
The 2009 WRX is expected September 2008.
The tweaked 09 WRX will have a larger turbo with more boost, and an easier flowing catalytic converter, making 265horsepower@6000rpm and 244 ft torque @4000rpm, up from 224hp@5200rpm, 226torque@2800rpm.
I'm calling it the 09 WRX.5 (half way to an STI).
The 09 WRX also gets revised suspension with larger stabilizer bars and stiffer springs, lower profile Summer Performance Tires Dunlop SP Sport 1 225/45R 17" tires (so you may want to buy All Season tires) with new gray 12 spoke alloys, standard mesh grill, upgraded tilt/telescoping leather wrapped steering wheel with red stitching, side moldings, and carbon black checkered cloth with red stitching.
The aero package is now standard on all models. The 4 door spoiler is now standard, the 5 door gets the STI rear spoiler.
The 09 Premium package picks up a new sunroof, plus fog lights, All Weather package with heated seats, defrosting mirrors and front wiper de-icer, aero package, upgraded stereo..
All new 2.5GT Premium 4 and 5 door models have the automatic 4speed Sportshift trans, active all wheel drive, all season tires, and the 224hp and 226ft torque like the 08s. 2 piece heated front bucket seats with adjustable active headrests (not Performance front buckets). No Aero package on the GT, it has , same cloth, same front grill and bright headlights as the on the Outback Sport. The 2.5GT doesn't get the STI spoiler.

09 had problems too, lots of blown motors from a bad batch of bearings.

Synolimit - I read a thread sale stop on NASIOC with the 09 having engine failures.

With this said I am leaning towards getting an 08.

Those problems have since been fixed. Most the cars didnt last long when they had their problems. Subaru recognized the problem and fixed it for the people who had the problems. I watched one crap itself on a dyno. It was a stage 2 with full exhaust, intake, intercooler and injectors. Engine went; guy returned to stock, put the car on a trailer to the dealership; they fixed it; broke in the engine (again); then put the mods back on and had no more problems with the car.

2008 WRX problems

I have had my 2008 Subaru WRX since July of 2008. Shortly after I got it they had a recall on the turbo oil supply line. I switched out my stock T04 for the 2009 WRX VF52 in 2009 when a buddy of mine who had the 2009 WRX upgraded to a Garrett Turbo and sold me the stock one. We both replaced it in a few hours and it bolts right in. Last year I was riding and it started to leak oil so I took it to the dealership and they swapped the turbo oil supply line for free. After that I can tell you the 2008 is a great car, no problems and the original turbo was fun. With the additional power added in 2009 I do wish I would have waited another year to save some trouble but Im still happy with my subaru. My advice would be to either get a 2009 WRX or get an older 2004 to 2007 WRX/STi. Im still kicking myself for not opting out for the STi but all the same I still love my subaru.
