Stagger, +1BILLION to the Manx style sandrail. I wanted to convert my VW into one when I first got it. Dad didnt want to help so I just left it stock. Hope you can get some good deals and luck with this build.

I found a alleged jdm ej20 on craigslist for $750.00 that supposedly has 65k miles on it. No harness or ECU though. How hard do you think it would be to find a good wiring harness? ECU I could go full custom standalone but that looks like it would cost more then the engine itself. I am trying to go as cheap as possible without sacrificing quality. Time to start digging through the junkyards. I think I an set on a manx body too. I found a few rollers for under a $1K.

I know VWs very well but Im starting to realize what a noob I am when it comes to our cars motor and all supporting systems.

Lol man. You are kind of crossing the engine with a different chassis though. It will be beast though. I really hope to see this thing eventually.

You could always wire it up yourself. All you'd need is the electrical schematic and alot of wire. I'm looking to find the schematic but haven't had luck yet.

If you're not confident in your wiring skills, let me know. I'm an electrician and depending on cost of wire/connectors I may be able to build you one.

Thats the one thing I am not strong in or sincerely dislike, auto electronics. I know I could probably figure it out, but man it frustrates the hell out of me. Thanks for the offer. I will keep you in mind. I have calls into the local junkyards now in case a totaled WRX comes in, and lurking craigslist. If you run into a schematics chart let me know! Thanks brother!

Still have not found a motor yet either. JDM motor I looked at turned out to be an imposter.

Stagger, that VW Thing looks pretty nice from the pictures. If anything, I want to know what you think about it even if you dont get it.

I love dunes. Sand mountain all the way. I really want to go check out glamis and pismo.

Right now im trying to decide if it is possible to cram a gsxr600 motor into my blaster frame. Everyone has streetbiked quadracers and banshees but no blasters haha.

I think a suby motor in a rail would be insane. I want to build a rail eventually, maybe I will steal your idea. To keep the sand out of the intake, you could run a snorkle with a 90* turn at the top and face it backwords and also run a cone filter. That would probably do the job pretty well.

HAHAHHA I cant afford that thing! I wish. I am headed out to talk to him about the motor and take some pics of mounts, and engine cage, and figure how I want to do this. The guy is really cool and built the thing himself, so I am just going out with a 12 pack and a lot of questions. Feed any normal guy some brews and usually you can get him to talk about cars all day. Thats the plan. It would be nice to build something streetable.

WRXKidd - Intake isn't soo much the concern with a decent air cleaner or they even have the baja style enclose intake like you can see on the Thing in the link, its right above the motor. Everything I have been reading has to with sand in the belts and pulleys, bearings, etc. There are sealed parts that can be used. Sh!t's expensive though!

Well good luck.

Keep me posted. This is something I want to do in the future.

Maybe one day when yours is done I will come down to the County of Orange and bring a 12 pack and pick your brain. Then we can go shred the dunes!

Found a harness for $50. Dunno if you can use it. Might want to hurry though, looks like there is at least one other person who might be interested.
