So I went to Pismo this weekend and got my first real taste of the dunes and now I am sourcing a few bare sandrails (like the Sand Limo Squirt). Of course the only power plant option for me is a Subie. My question is, what needs to be plugged up to keep my internals safe from sand? Is there any good sites you guys might know that would have good info about these conversions? I am on the search. Since Sunday, I already picked up a new close ratio 091 bus tranny with all new internals and sourced the adapter plate to bolt up an EJ20. I found a few prospective motors too. I think this will allow my to get my kicks building a monster wrx for the sand and keep my nose clean on the street. Any help would be great thanks all.

Yeah me too, never researched about sand lol. I go to pismo all the time, never even thought of a Subie powered sand rail, always was thinking of some Honda powerplant, so it could hit VTEC on the beach My only input would be to get a really good air filter lol...
your best friend out there is going to be outerwears filter covers, i use to race quads for 4 years and thats all we ever used, and i would stay away from K&N filters as well, if you can find a foam filter and use FFT filter oil for it and outerwears cover, and that will work great, Outerwears, Inc. - Original manufacturer of Pre-Filters & Shockwears thats the website if your interested
SuBeast - I saw a convertable Baja up there with a legacy motor that sounded like a V8. I paid the guy $10 to take me for a spin. UNREAL! I mentioned my idea of a wrx motor and he said go for it, and he had a GTr28 sitting in his garage ready to go onto the 2.5 powerplant. We were already pulling wheelies.
VD5505 - Definitely stay away from the K&n, heard that. I'll check them out, thanks for the link. I didn't get a chance to pick that guys brain, but removal of smog gear will require plugging up ports on the motor to keep the sand out from what I gathered. Sealing around the heads and exposed belts, bearings, etc. Keep the look out if you can guys. I am talking to a guy right now in my area that might let go of a sealed EJ20 ready for a rail, (whatever the F that means). I have to convince him to sell it to me, but I bet If I tell his wife I have cash she'll squeeze his balls a bit for me. If not, I plan on spending a few evenings bring him beer and playing in garage scoping it all out, taking pictures, and learning a bit. I'll be sure to pass on the knowledge.
Thanks again for the help.

Legacy motors can be had for cheap. I saw a 76K complete 2.5 out of a rear end totaled car for $600! The few contacts I talked too are pushing the Leg 2.5. They all bought theres and then converted to turbo later. My feelings; daily driver is an EJ20, why not drop a couple extra $$, get familiar with what I daily drive and have a monster science project to learn from. We'll see what I end spending on a frame, and how much money I can hide from my wife, maybe my only option will be a Leg donor. I am kind of leaning towards a Manx style buggy.
Tonight, I picked up a 10" wider beam, VW stylie front suspension, for $75. I have issues.

dear LORD do i wish i lived on that side of the country!!!! This has got to be one of the coolest things ive read about a project in awhile. There is a vid of an STi ATV on youtube but this is cooler!
No advice but this is def mega cool!!!!! Keep at it, post up pics when you can.
ebay sells alot of sand rails w subie engines in them. u might check them out and c how they did theirs
I need a brain I can pick at. I tried to hit a few of those ebay guys up and they all said they have no idea, they just bought it that way, "but you want to buy it?"
rich idiots = mechanical retards
Im trying to learn damn it. There is a sand rail shop by my house, I am thinking about going over there this weekend and bugging those guys.
As I start collecting more parts I will post pics of the build. Who knows how deep this could go, but I imagine its gonna get expensive real quick Might take me awhile.
Tsuiso - West coast is has a lot to offer for off roading. Glamis is huge, you can get lost in mountains of sand, search it up. PIsmo - dunes driving on the beach...pure beauty. Oregon Coast has some sweet dunes too. Not too mention all the OHV parks everywhere. I'll post some pics of the pismo dunes from this last weekend when I get home.
