First off you just got the car. Spend some time with it. Drive it bone stock for a bit. 2,000 miles would be nice. Its a decent length of time for a break in. Please drive the car soft, get on it a bit on the highways where its nice and safe, take canyon roads and sit in traffic. Learn what your car likes and what it can and cannot handle.
During the next 2000 miles keep a notepad with you and write down things you would like to be better. Maybe the body rolls a bit more than you like in the rear or the brakes feel a little soft or fade quickly, maybe the stereo isnt quite to your liking. just leanr about your car then we can talk about mods.
DO NOT PUT A BOV ON YOUR SUBARU. PLEASE.
Blow off valves work by dumping the air in the intake manifold to atmosphere. Thats what makes the pssshhhttt noise you are after. The problem is that our cars use mass air flow sensors to determine how much fuel to send into the cylinders and it does so based on how much air is currently in the system. If you dump that air to atmosphere you cause a temporary rich condition that at best means you will have less power and at worst could cause CELs and other engine malfunctions. If you want to upgrade your stock bypass valve for one that opens faster and closes faster and is capable of holding back additional boost there are a number of companies that make BYPASS VALVES that recirculate the air back into the intake and do not cause engine problems.
If you are just after the noise Cobb makes a short ram intake that removes all the sound baffling from the stock intake path. It allows you to hear the factory recirculating valve and for many drivers ( myself included ) it makes my high school self smile. Here is a video of the 2012 wrx with and without the cobb SF intake so you can hear the difference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2kM4aVp5kA
Keep in mind that when you change intake and exhaust parts on newer Subarus you will need to tune for them in order for the ECU to handle the changes. If you are just installing a Cobb intake then their AccessPort with OTS Stage 1 + SF should work great.
Also sidenote, whats with the marked increase in this question in the past month. Ive gone about a year seeing this posted maybe once or twice. Just the musings of a confused lurker.
Its summer time, As it starts warming up more people are taking a look at their cars and thinking "I want to go drive that and maybe change something to make it more my style"
Could also be the Fast and Furious effect. Even though Furious 7 had a decided lack of streetcar tuning and racing ( other than paul walkers bullet resistant STi and a handful of super computer/super cars ). There is usually a spike in aftermarket parts sales following a fast movie. I was working for an audio shop back in 06 when fast 3 came out and I think that was the only time I can remember being sold out of street glow : )
Im not sure who to talk to about making a stickie but i might sit down and write out a nice one. Ill title it something like "so your thinking about a BOV" or "go BOV yourself". Anyway there are plenty of those already but there must be a way to "reach these kids".
Agreed! Do not put a BOV on your car unless you feel like A/F headaches the whole time. The car I just recently bought and started to bring back from the rice grave the stock BPV's recirculating hose was cut completely off and the kid removed the elbow and even cut the return off of the turbo inlet so I had two open air flows. Other than the sound they do virtually nothing and truly create problems with venting to atmosphere.
If you truly want the sound and don't care then just remove the elbow and attached line to your stock BPV and wait for the rough idle's and your car running rich to begin.
