Black on exhaust tips?

Guy at work yesterday noticed my exhaust tips were black and said something about burning valves? Just wondering if this is normal or not for the tips to turn black, and if not, what causes it?

If the car is running rich and/or you have a catless or high flow exhaust as well. Mine are black because my car is on the richer side because of the OTS map I'm running currently. What mods are done, and what year is your car, there is nothing in your profile that I can see.

It's a 2011. It could have that, I got it two days ago from a dealer auction. I thought it was the stock exhaust although it doesn't have mufflers from the axle back because another 11 had the same exhaust, but a guy at the local motorcycle shop has a wrx that he's done some goods mods to, and he told me it was aftermarket. I'll post a picture on here after work and see what you guys think it is

Usually Black residue is caused by a rich condition. The last few years Subaru has been tuning them really rich to aid in proper break in. after the engine is broken in, any tuner shop can lean out the mix with a new map.

Do you have any Mods on the car? especially cat-less parts the cat is designed to burn off volatile solids and gases. without a cat those volatile solids get sent out with the exhaust and some get deposited on the exhaust tips and rear bumper.

Even a perfectly tune engine will deposit a bit of dark residue on the exhaust tips eventually, That's the price we pay for BURNING fossil fuels. If you are having a tough time cleaning it off I recommend simple green on a soft cloth roll the cloth and spray the outside and let it soak the exhaust tips a bit. remove the towel and rinse till its clean. : )

Does it have a dp?
It may have been modded before you bought it, and the person must took off the mods to sell it because a lot of people won't buy a modded car for fear of out being beat on and the mods being done incorrectly. Which could have contributed to the black as well.

These cars are more lein on the stock tune. This is more dangerous than being a little rich. That's why many people advise getting an ap and flashing their cars immediately after purchase. Before I started modding my car I had no black on my exhaust at all.

It's nothing to be afraid of just a rich condition...

if you dont like it though, you can clean it up with some #0000 steel wool and some metal polish

Idk it has any mods only had it 2 days lol but my friend knew the guy that ran it through the auction and he said it was a gutted repo, and the literally everything was new on the car. Interior, drive train, suspension, rebuilt engine. But idk if that's true or not. I haven't had time to really go over it yet between work and driving it all night after lol but it does feel a lot faster and is a lot louder than this 13 hatch I drove at the dealership, so Idk. I'll look into it. Just wanted to make sure the black wasn't a big deal. I'll clean it off and see if it starts happening again
