After a WRX STi, what year to start with?

Hey guys new to the forum. just found it. I'm looking at getting a Impreza WRX STi from inbetween 2003 to 2007 (i've found the price stays pretty flat no matter what year) and i was just wondering which ones would be my best choice? Which would hold up best to modding? I am looking at getting it between 350 to 400 HP by the time i am done playing with it.

It really depends on what style you're looking for. Every WRX/STI owner has his preference to either the bugeye (02-03), the single grille (04-05), the triple grille/hog nose (06-07). They all hold up well to modding. I'm not sure but i dont think they brought the STi here until 04. I would say a 2005. But i like the single grille personally.

Toms pretty much right on there. THe STI was brought over in late 03, as an 04 (peanut eye). Im an 06-07 fan, but Im biased being that I own an 07 WRX. Best bet is to find one as stock as possible and learn about the car and mods, and go from there.

It depends really on the looks. I love the 04/05 style the best. A lot of people like the 04/05 tail lights instead of the 06's and 07's. Oh and the difference between 04 STi and the 05 STi is the hubs. 04 is 5x110 while the 05 is 5x114.

05+... You want the upgraded hubs

If price was no object I would go for an 07+. That way you get the better 3 and 4th gear ratios.

not a fan of the new hatch back look what so ever on the newest ones. so that'd limit me a lot if i went 07+ only. i'll still look at 07's if i can find them. front end styling i really like them all. now i've noticed some have low profile and others have high profile hood scoops. were those an option available on any years or just certain ones?

the 04 and 05 came with higher scoops then they scaled them down in the years after that.

ah ok thanks. anything saying that the 04 and 05 couldn't make as much HP and TQ as the newer 06+ models?

They have virtually the same motor and the same size turbo so the HP/TQ numbers will be about the same. There are some small differences. The 07 STi has a VF43 which is the same size as the VF39 but has a bigger wastegate. The 08 STi has dual AVCS and I think a VF48(?).

yeah i really like the looks of the bigger hood scoop, and HATE the look of that extra spoiler above the rear window on the 06+ cars so looks like 04 or 05 are my best choices

You guys that think things are removable or something like that. I have seen many STIs without the "extra" spoiler, while I have seen many add them. Things are interchangeable, or can be added/removed. Dont limit on something small like that.

maybe it can but wouldn't it leave marks where it was? if that was the only difference i wouldn't let it limit me. but like i said i like the larger hood scoop. and to get one on a newer one that'd be another piece i'd have to buy.

You couldn't put a 04-05 hood scoop on a 06-07 anyways unless it was a replica 04-05 scoop. The rear diffuser/rear roof vane...serves a purpose. It helps the 06-07 make more downforce across the STI's wing. If you ever actually looked at the STI wing...it is also a spoiler/wing. The bottom peice is lipped enough to basically be a spoiler with a wing attached to it. On a side note, all 07 WRX/STIs are stricken with crazy ass fuel maps from the factory (read: yes, crazier than most of the other model years). 07s have a slightly longer ratio transmission. I've been told (by my tuner) that the 07 STIs don't quite make the same HP as 04-06s. Not sure if the VF43 or the longer ratio trans is the reason for that. 08s are a bit limited for turbo upgrades also....unless you plan on changing the layout to the 02-07 layout or something else completey different (rotated or whatever). Someone already touched on the fact that 05+ has different hubs and support wider rims/tires than the 04 STIs. The 08s do the same thing to the 05-07. 08s can support wider rims and tires. Uh, that is about as much as I can think of currently.
