After Market Up-pipes

Hello everyone,

I recently bought my 2005 wrx around 6 months ago and am loving it. When I first got it I took it to my subaru dealership to get all the maintenance and stuff out of the way. Now for my first mod I am looking to change my Up pipe, because I'd rather not have the stock one on there. I bought the car completely stock except for a perrin downpipe. Now I am a bit of a noob with cars, but learning, and I know the down pipe and up pipe attach on different sides of the turbo, so would my down pipe play a role on what up pipe would fit? I have had someone tell me yes and another person tell me no. If it does matter, how do I go about figuring which up pipe would fit.
Also, does anyone have any good recommendations on up pipes? I was thinking about getting a perrin. I know i need to purchase the gaskets separately and a resistor for the check engine light. Is there anything else I am missing?
And finally, I heard installation is annoying but not too hard, but I'd like some more opinions on that and installing the resistor as well.
thanks for all the help guys!

On your setup just about any Up-Pipe should work. (Since it sounds like you have a stock location turbo).

The Invidia and Grimspeed Up-Pipes have always worked pretty well for our customers. You will definitely want to replace the gaskets when you do this job. It's not the most difficult job by any means but it does require a little bit of patience to wiggle the old up-pipe out. The new aftermarket up-pipe should be quite a bit easier to get installed since they don't have the bulky heat shields that the OEM ones do.

As for the resistor it's only required if your car has an EGT sensor in the up pipe but your new Up-Pipe doesn't. You can either install the correct Ohm resistor instead of the EGT sensor or you can buy a Up-Pipe that allows you to re-use the sensor (Like the invidia one).

Sorry for the double post but here's more info on the EGT delete if you need it:

I hope you're tuned for the DP. A stage 2 would turn off the UP sensor I thought...

To be honest I have no idea if my car is tuned for the DP. I mean its been running fine for the 6 months Ive had it, do you think the dealership would have said something if it wasn't? Unfortunately I dont have an accessport.
Say if my car wasn't tuned to the DP and I did get the new up pipe would that affect my car really badly?

It could be open source tuned. You'd have a check engine light (CEL) and I'm sure it wouldn't be running as good as a tuned car would.

It should be tuned...but, can you track down the previous owner? To make sure...

Just buy a 04-07 STI up pipe or and 06-07 WRX up pipe. Factory fitment and less headaches...

It's factory so no. You can eliminate the CEL for the EGT with a simple resistor, at least with factory you can retain the heat shields and you know it will fit correctly.

Keep in mind that although the factory sti up pipe doesn't have a cat it's still more restrictive than aftermarket.

Flow bench data for the grimmspeed up pipe:

Vehicle performance is not that sensitive to up-pipes because it's just an empty pipe. You just want one without a cat in it, to protect your turbo.

I chose an Invidia item because it had a sensor fitting. Connecting the sensor will prevent an Engine Check Light (a 'code' in forum-speak), which is annoying.

It's typical to turn that sensor channel off when you upgrade the engine management, or 'tune' the engine, but I wasn't planning to do that until later (still haven't actually).

It's a nice pipe.
