07 STi vs 2011 STi

I have been an STi fan ever since they came out in 04 to the US. The only thing that got me through college was the fact that when I did graduate and get a nice paying job I would easily be able to afford one. My dilemma now is quite a pickle. I found a 2007 STi with 8800 miles, with a few minor scratches for 32k. The car has been babied, and was this dudes wifes car. I dont really know if I buy his story, or the reason he is selling it. He seems kind of shady. Even just occasionally driving around I have put well over 12k on my Civic every year. He did state that they didnt drive it all the time, and have another vehicle they put the miles on. His excuse is a classic one, but easily believable. "I am getting a truck to have more space" In his case a GMC Sierra 1500.
Now I know how great the 06-07 STi's are as I have a buddy who owns a 2006 Black STi. I have driven it and love being in the drivers seat. It makes you feel alive when you drive one.
My question is this. I have done some research on the 2011 STi. The regular putting down 265 HP is quite impressive, but all the different sites that you can order them from claim that the STi also has that same HP mark and same TQ. Other sites have it rated at 305 HP. I have looked at the options and it is fairly obvious that the 2011 has SO MANY MORE features. Has anyone found how it rates to the 06-07 STi? Have the 2011's been released yet? I havent seen any on the street yet. It would be great if I could wait a few months to save up a bit, but I want to know... What would you do in my spot? Pay 37k for a new 2011 STi? or around 32k for a used one that is basically new with winter and summer tires? The 5k price jump is no worry, as the lower APR% will most likely make a new STi less than a used one.
Please give me some feedback! I want to know what you guys would do in my situation.

Thats 265 HP rating is for the 09+ WRXs. The 02-08 WRX made around 224 (factory rated BHP) where the STI has made the 300-305 HP. If you are comparingan 06-07 STI to a 2011 WRX and you can afford the STI thats the one to go with. If you are comparing STI to STI it would come down to body style (for most), me personally choosing an 06-07 (partial since I own one, but also believe it to be the best looking).

Ok, that is what I thought. I knew the regular WRX was at that, but wasnt sure if the site had messed up or not. Well, I do like each style. The 2011 is nice because of all the extra goodies you can get that the 07 doesnt have.

Then it seems to me that you have made up your decision. I havent looked into the changes made from the 2010 to the 2011 model if any. Either way you will be getting a subie, cant go wrong there.

i like the 2011 but i think its gonna follow subarus usual trend of the first year woes... i say wait a yea and see what issues this ones gonna bring.

basco 09-12-2010 03:14 PM

there is no first year woes for it to follow, the only new thing is some sway bars and springs...after just driving both cars back to back a week ago if you can afford it 2011 for sure...and BTW 32K for an 07 is wayyyy wayyyy over priced

mosc 09-12-2010 04:04 PM

These are the best values for your money
~35k: 2011 STi
~30k: 2011 WRX
15-25k: used STi
10-15k used 06+ WRX
<10k: used 02-05 high mileage WRX

I personally value the 2011 improvements a great deal. The WRX got actual fender wells and the STi is available as a sedan.

I really have been leaning towards the new 2011 just because I will have this car 72 months and beyond most likely. It would be nice to know that I was the only one to drive it. I just wanna get some feedback as to the ride quality of the 2011 STi. I know the 06-07 STi is fairly unforgiving on slightly bumpy roads.

basco 09-12-2010 10:36 PM

the 2011 is slightly stiffer, but it's still acceptable for daily driving...not near as rough as an evo

theres more than some sways and suspension... im pretty sure something will pop up.. it AWAYS does then they do a body change.

and yes 32k for a 07 is way overpriced i paid that for mines new in 07.

basco 09-13-2010 07:11 AM

what body change? they've stuck a big wing on the back of the sedan they already built...and they're using the exact same STi hatch as 08-10

STi_from_DSM 09-14-2010 07:19 PM

I agree, they really havent done much with the 2011 STi. Suspension upgrades and that is about it. The 08-10 STi engine is in it. 305hp/290tq. The only thing I really have noticed is the Satellite Navigation which looks pretty sweet. (I get lost a lot, lol)
I have the guy talked down a bit, but he is now trying to sell me all the stuff he has for the car, thing is I need winter tires/rims for it, and would not want to buy a brand new (almost) car and then have to shell out even more for rims and tires for the winter. His price is now $29k just for the car, $29.5k for car plus winter rims and tires. 30k For car, rims/tires, an Escort Redline radar detector, oil change, Detail, new wiper blades, and probably other stuff I am missing. The car has a few scratches on it that are noticeable when you are up close, so it is not in excellent condition in my mind therefore worth between good and excellent. I would say around $27.5k is about right. With all the stuff brand new that he listed I could get all of it for 29.1k So really not understanding why he is about 900 bucks off.

What would you guys do?

basco 09-15-2010 06:46 AM

that's still too high...my friend payed 26000 for an 07 STi w/ 11K miles from the dealership two years ago

I agree the price is still a bit high. I'd do some searching on line before making a decision.

I just bought an '07 w/ 7k miles (similar situation, 3rd car and never drove it) and paid just under $27k. I'm at altitude here in CO (~7K feet) and traded in my 06 Corvette. Coming from the 'vette the only thing I miss is the low end TQ, and the STi seems to have a bit more body roll (easily changed w/ suspension).

$ wasn't really an issue in the purchase for me so to decide between the two it came down to one question: Will I mod the car? The answer was "Hell Yes!" and as such I went with the older model and voiding the warranty wasn't an issue.

If you're planning on modifying the car, I'd recommend going with the used car as you likely won't have an opportunity to get a warranty on the '07. If you're not into modding, go new!

STi_from_DSM 09-16-2010 09:38 AM

Well the 07 comes with a factory warranty up to 30k. So I would be covered for about 21k miles if anything goes wrong. I do plan on going to a stage 2 setup once the warranty is up though. But, for the time being I would just want to get maybe a catback on there as I wont have the money to mod it just yet, but will in a year or so.
