04 WRX first mods

Just bought a 1 owner wrx not modded from a 65year old women, car has 116k. I'm going to rebuild the transmission. So while I have car apart is there any important upgrades I should do? What weaknesses does the 2.0T engines have? I heard the tranny isn't super strong and would like to upgrade that.

04 had the better transmission than 02 and mid 03...Why are you rebuilding the trans? Well change the timing belt for starters if it hasn't already been done. Clutch/Flywheel as well, but that's a given since you have the trans out. Give the car a good once over and if it has a clean bill of health(i.e. compression, no oil leaks, fluid leaks things of that nature) than I would consider some form of EM for it first...

Well I bought car with transmission shifting threw gears rough. So going to open it up and go through everything, and buy a rebuild kit. Owner also said car has a miss in #2 cylinder but while running engine seems fine

Only misses when I start it up. Maybe add a new head gasket

You might want to upgrade the transmission mounts while you're there and perhaps a few polyurethane bushings

Car does have a brand new clutch. Any upgrades for reliability? I know they are great engines. I want to stay 300hp or less

A cat-less turbo uppipe, to protect the turbo.

This is what it looks like with a thermal wrap on it, prior to installation.

Again once it has a clean bill of health start with Engine Management of some sort, whether it be Cobb AP, Open source, Hydra, etc. Then go with exhaust...

I like the Cobb AP system... What exhaust is recommended. I want it to sound great, have some noise but not too loud. Like an in-between pipe is what I want.

After market DP and factory cat back...that will be quiet, but still give a a good performance factor.

Invidia Q200 - that's the one I want. Here's a pic of the down pipe and cat back exhausts. Together they are a turbo-back exhaust.

There are a few down pipe (DP) options. Ones with- or without a cat(alytic converter) and divorced- or open bellmouth fitting. The bellmouth fitting is bolted to the discharge of the turbo.

The picture show is of at catted and divorced downpipe.

Correct me if I'm wrong.. So a dp is what's gonna add HP gains and a cat back is just for the sound aspect and not performance.

Correct, the amount of hp gains from a cat back are very minimal...maybe 5hp overall
