Painting oem 2012 rims gold?!?!

Because of my financial set backs I can't afford to buy some premium rims for my 12' dark grey wrx. I was always drawn towards the older gold sti colored rims and I found that grimmspeed makes the closest color for that . So how about sanding down the stock rims painting it gold?!? Yay or nay?

;)

Grimmspeed paint is expensive after you count in the cost for shipping. I would just use a Duplicolor. Maybe slight wet sand to get any foreign crud off. You could always powdercoat too if you really liked the color.

I saw each can going for 7 dollars? And my car is the dark grey pearl I guess if you wanna get technical. I have a buddy that does this to all his cars he's got a dust free bubble in his garage I think I might hit him up to get the original coat off my rims.
Has anyone seen those style rims gold before?

Aspired newb Subaru enthusiast
Right, each can may be $7 but s&h may be $14. At that price point you can go to your local auto store and pick up Duplicolor. If your friend has a dust free bubble even better. But most just use a rattle can and a deck of cards. As I mentioned, if you really want durability powdercoating is the way to go.

Heard powder coating Is $$$ I guess it's worth it. I doubt I can find duplicolor the right hue of gold. Really trying to match those older style. And hey either way better than spending 1600 on rims alone I guess

Your rims are 17", right? I got my WRX OEM 17" wheels powdercoated for $250 total. Might be worth the look.

Here's what I came up with a quick Google search: Gold Wheel Paint? - NASIOC

Post #45 mentions the color code for Dupont for the BBS Gold. Few other options listed as well. Worth a look and further search.

I work in a body shop as lead painter and i have a 2009 blue wrx. I plan on painting my oem wheels in the 2007 gold. Paint code for ppg paint is 916137i and its called Enkei gold. In case any one wanted to know. Hope this helps. I plan on doing mine after i am done painting my buddys turbo'd specv

pzr2874 06-25-2012 12:41 PM

Sentra SpecV?

09bluewrx 06-25-2012 12:47 PM

Another ppg code for 2005 is 908233. Oem code for that is GK1

09bluewrx 06-25-2012 12:49 PM

Yes its a sentra spec v. Its an 02. Hes running it at 14night pounds right now but we are going to bump it down to 7a pounds. I painted it in ppg harlequin blue fade to red. It changes like 8i different colors depending on how the light hits it. Its sick looking

09bluewrx 06-25-2012 01:03 PM

And an update on the differences between those two paint codes. The enkei gold is a lighter shade of gold where as the GK1 gold is darker. Imo the GK1 is better looking. I mixed about 2 ounces of each paint up just to see

Old buddy of mine had his boosted and done correctly on 10lbs. Didn't last very long at all (6-9 months).

Good luck

09bluewrx 06-25-2012 01:55 PM

Yea i know ive heard they dont last long especially on stock internals (which he has) so hes going to go back to 7. He hardly drives it though. Hell its an 02 and it only has like 32,000 miles on it
