From the article:
Should you buy the Subaru WRX or the big brother STI? Is 2015 Subaru WRX STI better than the regular WRX? The 2015 Subaru STI features a 2.5L boxer four producing 305 horsepower while the 2015 Subaru WRX has a more modern 2.0L producing 268 horsepower and peak torque at a low 2,000 RPM.
Three reasons he completely neglects:
1) The steering on the 15+ STi is unbelievably tight and crisp. Better than anything Subaru has done before. Every single time I turn the wheel it's simply staggering. I've owned WRX's and STi's before. This is not the same and not something you can mod in.
2) DCCD makes the car feel completely different at handling limit. The WRX's fixed torque split front and rear leads to understeer and less stability. DCCD cannot be modded in. To me this isn't a track feature. Combined with good tires and road conditions the STi is basically impossible to break loose on public roads unless you're completely suicidal. In the snow however, the difference is even more extreme.
3) The resale value on the STi, assuming the car is still running, exceeds the WRX by the difference in their sticker price as has been shown for over a decade by this point. Anybody shopping for a 15/16 WRX/STi is unlikely to keep the car past say 2025 and at the point of sale they will get back the cost difference.
And like he said. If you buy one of those stage 3 packages from Cobb, the STi's larger displacement will magnify the difference in power between the two with equivalent mods. The FA is not "better" than the EJ that came before it at making power. It's more efficient when not under load but has higher compression. The EJ is every bit it's equal if not superior at additional power envelope. The FA20 is a more fuel efficient choice than the EJ25, other differences are exaggerated.
and getting a WRX's transmission, brakes, and suspension to equal the STI would really add up
