Possible Twin Turbo W/ different Sized Turbo's???

So, i over heard a subie owner talking about twin turboing his 10' WRX. He was talking wbout using two different sized turbo's. One that would reach boost early and one that would reach full boost later. I've never heard of this before and it doesnt sound like a good idea. What're your guy's thoughts? This guy also said his car was making 360hp with stock turbo @21psi and a TBE and tune.

It'd be a good idea if he could get it to work, but he'd need to do a sequential setup which are a major PITA to get functioning in the first place let alone tuning

That's old school. I haven't even heard mention of a turbo setup like that in a long time. It's about as impractical as the supercharger/turbo combination I saw like, 10 years ago. It's possible, but doesn't really gain much. The stock VF52 won't produce 360 wheel HP on pump gas, not even close. It sounds like this guys has been standing around in parking lots talking to people who almost know what they're talking about, and then he spurts out the stuff he thinks will sound cool. That's my opinion, but whatever. I don't even think that 360 crank hp is a realistic figure even if he has a protune and TBE.

The problem with the twin-turbo setup is that the smaller turbo ends up being a block for the larger turbo, and might reduce lag, but also limits the larger turbo's potential. It's not as efficient as the kid makes it sound.

It is realistic that he's pushing 21psi of boost, as the VF52 can do it, just not hold it to redline. It'll taper down to 15-16 at redline.

I'm pretty stoked that you chimed in, Synolimit. You're a perfect example of someone who's really taken the VF52 to its limit. I was bummed knowing my STi's turbo couldn't push 350, even on E85, because of the altitude here. That's why I'm getting a Polka Pickle instead.

That was my thought on the twin turbo setup. I was just wondering if there was something i was missing lol. Yeah when he said 360 i almost laughed. I dont know quite enough yet to laugh at himbut i know enough to realize he wasnt making 360 hp. What is a realistic number for that car with a TBE and protune? I thought maybe 300hp . . .maybe.

basco 04-03-2011 10:28 PM

No sequential is definitely the way to go if you can get it to work, you'll have all the spool of the tiny turbo and all the power of the big turbo, the trick is getting the valves to work right but when you do you end up with something like this

it is possible though...

turbo + supercharger

ya that sucks and for people that only have 91 octane :( i will be taking the vf52 to the max with boost but whats really helping is all the little things too. like 3" inlet, tgv deletes etc. boost will be up there but it can push that boost without so much effort which could end its life early or just hurt overall numbers.

OP your right, TBE and tune is 300whp maybe! i seen a 2011 with TBE, pump, injectors, tune and E85 at 18psi only run 285whp, 325wtq.

Open mouth, insert foot on my part. :o

I wonder how hard the valve work is to get right. I guess it's the same as the super/turbo setups. I've never seen a WRX with it before. The last car I saw that done to was a 98 Integra GSR. I guess that's what I get for not having a subscription to Import Tuner nowadays.

basco 04-04-2011 02:10 PM

It's not too bad to get everything functioning its the tuning where it gets difficult making sure that the second turbo doesn't come on too soon and surge the crap out of the first turbo and not too late that power falls off, but my next car is looking like it'll be running twins along the lines of Lee's car in the vid I posted but thats at least a year to two away

turmic 04-04-2011 08:14 PM

What next car? P/M me you tease.

oct6454 04-04-2011 09:42 PM

Okay, that makes sense. Yeah speaking of burning up the turbo, he was complaining that he wasnt making boost at high RPM that same day. But he idnt seem to know anything. You know its bad when a guy who has owned his sub for a month can call your BS. I do read on here allot though haha. Thanks for the knowledge!

He probably is talking about tapering off toward redline which is completely normal on a small frame turbo like the VF52 or TD04
