Newbie in need of serious help

I have a 08 wrx wagon with a blown motor, I'm a single father and it's my only
Vehicle and a long story, my question is does anybody know anywhere I can get a crate motor for it, everyone I find is an STI motor which is fine but will it go right in? I know I will need a new comp or a reflash but anything else to make it work? And will the 04-07 motor work in it as well? I don't think there was much change from those years to the 08 , again not sure just a newb, please help would be greatly appreciated thank you

Sounds like a tricky situation. Is this a project you're thinking about tackling yourself? Keep in mind that a "cheap" engine rebuild will still cost you several thousand if everything goes according to plan. Good luck and keep us posted.

What exactly is blown? You can pick up a new short block from Subaru for about $2k as long as you can use your heads and all other bolt on items.

Amazon.com: SUBARU STI 2.5 LITER SHORT BLOCK EJ257 ENGINE: Automotive Amazon.com: SUBARU STI 2.5 LITER SHORT BLOCK EJ257 ENGINE: Automotive

It's an STI block which will have slightly lower compression, so you'll need to tune for it. Otherwise, buy that, put it back together with your heads and other peripherals.

Those pistons are problematic from what I remember.

Edit: nevermind, that was always just based on tune.

Well it's always a good idea to get a tune if you change anything performance wise, but if your just replacing a stock motor with another stock motor then you should be okay. The heads on the 08's are different because they have AVCS where as the older models did not. You will have to check the heads for any damage as well. I do believe the newer shortblocks supercedes the previous years. I do know that they made a few changes to the motors, nitrided crank, rods are different and pistons as well( still crappy).

Thank you everyone for your input, I got screwed out of my warranty then Subaru tried to help me and they want $7k to rebuild it, and they didn't go into specifics as to what was wrong other then the short block and the cams, so I found STI crate motors for much cheaper but I can only find STI swaps no wrx's I'll keep everyone posted thank you!

Looks like I'm going with and STI crate motor and an STI ecu and that should complete the swap if what I read was correct!

Shouldn't need the ECU. All you'll need is the STi shortblock.
