Just priced out a list of mods, but need a HP ballpark to sell the wife on. Any idea what I can get out of the following? (and what if anything isn't worth buying)
The best way to gain HP is a bell-mouth designed downpipe and and tune (COBB AP, pro-tune, ECUtek). What year of the wrx do you have/want? If you have an 06 or newer, you don't need an uppipe since it does not come with a cat in it. 08's and newer would benefit from a CAI but the 02-07's would not. The catback won't give you any gains at all and it is just for the look and sound.
I don't think this type of question is allowed... but if all you need is a number to flaunt to your wife, I'd say ~240 whp assuming you have a 2.0L wrx. It really varies, though. Depending on your car, elevation and type of dyno, my estimate could be way off.
Yep, as was said the 08s NEED exhaust work. I have an 08 sedan. DP and catback are nearly minimum. Suby even put a cat in the DP again, so a high flow cat DP is needed IMO. The UP looks restrictive, but I can't find any numbers anywhere on gains with new ones. I probably won't ever look at a new turbo as I leased, and need bolt on mods, not big expensive changes. I can't really find any ballpark gains from anything but flashing and CAI. Subaru performance sells it's own catback which is basically what the 09s get from the factory. (I realize the 09s have a larger turbo, but exhaust was the biggest change otherwise) If I keep it Suby I retain the warranty on the new parts.
I think the up pipe is even LESS important that it was on the 02-07 (it wasn't important there either). The turbo placement of the 08 really lends itself to removing restrictions in the headers. No, that's one thing they didn't mess up. Intake, cat back, yes. They did mess those up. The downpipe always had two cats and still does and was always a piece of crap and still is, that never changed.
Interesting, so a DP and catback with a flash is probably the best bang for the $. That cuts the cost fairly significantly. I DP listed for the 08 can be had on ebay for $250, but any earlier models go for allot less. I know it's the same engine setup as an 07. Do you know if an early DP fits the 08s?
I've got a local exhaust shop I've worked with for years. I think I'll take a drive and get a CB price from them. Since the car is a lease, I think aluminized is fine for the next 39 months. LOL I'll save the stock setup for trade-in day.
There's an 08 STi DP on ebay, and invidia says they take the same aftermarket DP. Would this be a good DP solution to stay legal. What the difference between the STi and the WRK in 08?
