I'm looking into installing a turbo-back exhaust on my '11 wrx sedan. I'm looking into getting the Invidia catless DP and either a magnaflow, perrin, or cobb CBE. Has anyone had any issues with installing a set-up like that? Thanks.
Would recommend staying away from catless dp's on the newer models.
you could need a little reducer to line them up, just something to look into, but you should be okay otherwise.
Cause possible boost creep/codes. They are more dirty. You don't gain much more hp than a catted one. You may get like 5 more hp if you're lucky with a protune.
Also emphasizing on what the bear says above, you must tune for a tbe.
Okay, that makes sense. Now, I know that the catted DPs' are more pricey than the catless, and I'm not trying to drop a lot of money right now. Would sticking a catted DP with the stock exhaust for the time being be foolish? I already have a shop that I trust that's going to do the tune once I change out the intake and exhaust.
No it wouldn't be foolish. You just wouldn't be getting much sound from your exhaust. If you can live with that then go for it. Or you could wait until you get the money and go for the tbe.
Personally, I'd wait until I had bought the whole "system" before installing (there's nothing wrong with buying parts at different times). That way, you only have to tune one time.
What about a custom cat back? I'm pretty sure psi does custom exhaust if I remember correctly. I was looking at them to do some work but never got around to it.
Hey guys. I just got an Invidia downpipe divorced wastegate installed in my 12' WRX. I haven't had any problems with it being cattless only that the stock midpipe is a smaller in diameter. Does anyone know were I can find a midpipe that can be installed to connect the Invidia downpipe to a SPT Catback? I need it to be 3" all the way.
I don't need an adapter. The down pipe mated with the stock mid pipe just fine. It's only that there was a small problem when they where tuning the car. The dyno kept showing an unusual dip in the graph. They tried everything they could to get rid of it. They came to a conclusion that since the exhaust goes from a 3" diameter (down pipe) to 2.5" diameter (mid pipe) and back to a 3" (SPT Catback exhaust) that there is interference with the flow. So they recommended me to get a 3" mid pipe. The only thing is I can't find one that will mate the Invida to the SPT Catback.
My Invidia downpipe fit perfectly. It's just I want it to be 3" pipe all the way to the back. Here's the dyno. I also just bought a Perrin front mount intercooler. That WRX stock top mount is crap. When we were doing pulls, I was spraying water on the top mount and it was steaming like crazy.
the dips could be knock. if they manifold was that hot then you were blowing way to hot of air down into the motor. the tuner should of backed the timing down. the FMIC will help greatly! the bigger 3" will do nothing for knock, you might get some power but I doubt it till you go above like 400hp.
^ pretty sure odds of boost creep go up with a non catted dp. Catted is the best bet. I typically don't stand behind my car and smell the fumes so that shouldn't matter. I'd rather have "safer" performance. You may lose a whole 5 hp from a catted dp.
You are absolutely right Andy! Although creep is not guaranteed to happen the odds are higher catless like you said and if it does happen (which nobody will ever know until the parts are already installed) catted is the best bet and cheapest in the long run.
Catless is cheaper considering you don't get creep/spikes.
Cats can clog up or even break apart over time.
I'm not so sure they smell worse. They are supposed to remove or lessen some of the bad emmisions so, I would think catless would stink more.
A few extra ponies is to be gained without cats but like Andy said, they are minimal.
There is nothing wrong with using a catless downpipe. Just be sure before you commit that you will be ready for the extra cost you may incur. It is possible you could need wastegate porting, extra tuning, external wastegate, and/or a different boost control solenoid to combat overboosting. You should also think about inspection if you have them. then again you may slap it on and everything be easy-peasy. I went catless and overboosted. I ended up having to get a ewg, ebcs, and tuning to fix it. I love it but, a catted would have saved me some much needed cash at the time.
