probably just blew some money but hey live and learn. I started researching gold reflective tape and I thought it might be a good idea to wrap everything that needed to stay cool. Since formula 1 uses it and the McLaren F1 etc why not give it a shot?
What I found was the real stuff is super expensive, so much so that I couldn’t even find prices since NASA uses it too. All I could find was "its expensive"!! Then I started seeing products that said they were just as good at reflecting 95-98% of radiant heat and up to 1000-2000 degrees etc but people were bashing them all over.
What i ended up settling on was DEI gold tape. 1. its all summit racing has that was gold. 2. its still pretty expensive. 3. it’s the only product that said it stops up to 80% of radiant heat and can be kept in places up to 850 degrees. I figured why not give it a shot. DEI is kinda name brand and at least there not trying to say their stuff is #1!
This stuff is super thin and just sticks on. In my opinion it looks pretty cool. Until I get on the dyno and see if my intake temps in the boost tube are cooler than other runs, I won’t know for sure but it was worth a shot.
I left the hot side tube alone because its already hot. not sure why you would want to keep engine bay heat off something that is probably hotter. I thought about wrapping it in exhaust wrap or something else that would keep the heat in but then the intercooler would have to work harder to cool the hot air since none of it would be able to escape into the engine bay. unless someone has proof otherwise ill just leave it alone.
Still looks cool though. Reminds me of the Brianchild Customs Subaru (pinkish/whiteish exterior, gold caged interior). It had the actual NASA gold junk on the intercooler pipes along with many other crazy-expensive goodies including a custom onboard hydraulic lift kit. I saw it in person at the UMD, College Park spring car show several years ago as well as in some tuner mags.
so Scott, how much did you end up using, as in , how many rolls.
I am not set up with a fmic on this car, nor do I feel the urge to take this one to that level since its already at 110k, but the one I will be buying soon will go FMIC.
