How important is 3" exhaust?

I've got an 09 sedan, and am planning on getting COBB's downpipe and AP ASAP. I also want to do the cat-back so I can run the stage 2 maps, but options are limited for the sedan, and even more limited when it comes to geting stuff up here in Canada. I can get a Magnaflow cat-back at a decent price, but it's only 2.5 inch tubing. Same with the SPT. If I sell a kidney, I can get the Borla, which is larger diameter (4" I think). Do I need 3+" exhaust, or will 2.5" do the job? I couldn't care less about sound, as long as it doesn't get too loud. I have a baby seat in the back.

Bigger diameter = less exhaust backpressure... No need to go for a 4" especially if u have a "baby on board" sticker in the rear window, however if it does get loud then you can always get a silencer (in other words... keep the kidney). Stick with the Cobb Cat-back if you are stickin with the AccessPort. Stage 2 map should be pretty cool. Let me know how it goes. Lookin into doin the same myself. I have the AP with just the "stage 1" and it runs really nicely. Just installed a Brembo BBK on four corners and ready to go with stage two so let me know how it goes!

Better switch out that DP, unless you want to create some serious problems. 2.5" probably wouldn't be a huge improvement over the 09 WRX sedan's cat-back. A Imprezia2.5 GT or 08 WRX...then yes, even a 2.5" CBE would be a improvement over those exhaust layouts.

The DP will be going in before or at the same time as the cat-back.

I would go with the COBB cat-back...if they made one for the sedans. I asked in another thread if anybody knows whether it's possible to use the 5 door's single exhaust on the sedan, but haven't gotten any feedback on that, and I kinda think it's unlikely.

Not sure if the 09 exhaust is that much different than the 08. It's still only 2.25" and squeezes down to 1.5" after the Y on the way to the mufflers. I'd love to hear from someone who has compared the two side-by-side though.

Excellent read - thanks for that! Sounds like I'll be fine with the Magnaflow 2.5".

Heh, ask Cobb for Decals that you can put diagonally all over the hood, doors, and trunk. Kidding...
