horrible gas mileage in a 08-09 WRX

I got a message today from another member asking me how my gas mileage was...We are both in the same boat and getting horrible gas mileage. I get just under 300 miles on a full tank. I dont drive my car crazy, i get on it every so often(thats why i bought the car), but for the most part I baby her. I dont really shift after 3500 rpm. I always fill my tank with 93 unleaded, so there is never crap gas in my tank. Is there a break in point where the motor it totally broken in or am i just destined to break my wallet at the pump?

Are you new to driving stick? I can get 400+ on a tank no problem.
I am in an 09 as well. It all depends on driving habits.

i've driven stick since i've started driving..... maybe i'm just not smooth...but i dont think that would explain losing 100 miles.

I noticed a big change in mileage if you shift early. Keep the RPM down and the gas mileage will improve. It's not much fun, though.

There's less boost at low rpm, thus the engine thinks it's smaller and more efficient.

I am averaging just around 20mpgs in mixed city and highway mileage for the first 1200 miles. Its well below 20mpg in strictly city driving.

Have you switch it to I drive versus Sport or Sport #?

What's your average mpg?

While I'm driving around in the city I average 20.5 but pure highway I get 26.5 mpg.

But I'm pretty sure the fuel light comes on, when there is still 3-3.5 gallons left in the tank.

How often are you getting into the throttle? If you drive it hard your gas mileage will suck.

I get 280 miles on a tank of gas and at least one other STi owner I know gets about the same. Your mileage sounds normal to me.

Sounds about average for a stock car. I get slightly better with my stage 2 when I keep my foot out of it. But there has been occasion where I have only gotten 9 miles to the gallon with mine.

How many of it are city miles and highway miles? I get crap mileage because I have a tendency to get into boost often.
