Cleaning the engine bay

Is it safe to take a hose and just hose down the engine and parts to clean it of dirt and sand and bugs?

MOST of the time as long as it's a cold engine.

On the other hand, if you are just running water off the engine with nothing else, it's not going to clean much (without degreaser or the likes).

You need three things.

Simple Green
Scrubby Brush
Hose with mister

Mist engine with water, spray everywhere with simple green and let sit for a few minutes. Scrub with scrubby brush and rinse off with a healthy dose of water.

Engine bay goes from this:

To this:

In about five minutes.

If anyone wants a really good product to clean their engine, check out P21S Total Auto Wash. It's pretty awesome stuff. I spray it on a completely dirty engine bay (without hosing off), let it soak, and rinse. It will be about 95% clean. Finish it off, let it dry, and apply protectant where applicable.

As for hosing, be sure to protect sensitive electronics. I like to use aluminum foil to cover things like the alternator. Just whatever you do, don't accidentally short +/- with foil... You'll have more problems than a wet or dirty engine bay then.

Yea Lmfao shorting out was the priority of my worries. So aluminum foil to wrap the alternator ? Anything else I should look out for even with the sprays and cleaners you guys are recommending ? How should I clean my radiator of bugs without having to take it out? Just keep spraying with water Or???

P21S is amazing stuff! But on the cheaper end, Scrubbing Bubbles works just as well, if not better, and only $2.99!
