Boost Spike

So installed my TBE earlier in the week and I went to reputable tuner I found. So he said he wants me to put more miles on the car before he tunes it due to I only had 450 on it a the time. So today i did a 1-2 gear pull, well at 6k in 2nd gear the car fell on its face. The check engine light cam on, cruise and Trac control. The car ran fine at the time it fell on its face, no noises, bangs, smoke ect when it happened. So I came home and re set my computer and the light went off. I learned a valuable lesson today, trust me it scared the sh!t out of me and plus i dont want to hurt the car. So did i have a Boost Spike?

Your car probably through the CEL from the turbo back exhaust and not having a tune, then went into limp mode. Resetting your battery will clear the CEL for a little bit till you drive it some more. Don't drive it too hard till you get the tune.

Thanks for the info bro. I have about 550 on odometer now so I should have a bout a 1000 miles it so I can get tuned. I'm also going to get a drop in filter and few gauages when i get tuned so i can monitor a few things. Brad.

No problem man. The tune should free up a good amount of ponies. Also, boost, egt and oil pressure are prob the most important to keep an eye on if you're getting gauges.

I'm thinking of getting my car tuned after i get the TBE and turn the boost up some. What would be the ideal boost to turn it up to on the 09 wrxs to be safe? Also, as far as gauges, I want to get them for the car for after I get the car tuned to make sure everything is running right, would it be okay to have a pillar gauge pod, even though the side airbags are in the pillars from factory? I wanted to get the pillar pod, but because of the airbags, I was thinking more towards the steering column pod (which I don't like as much). Any advice will help out because I will be doing all of these mods once spring comes around. Thanks!!

A-Pillar Gauge Pod Solution-Official Vendor - IWSTI.com: Subaru WRX STI Forums

Just posted in the other thread as well. Doesn't interfere with airbags according to the guy that makes them, (confirmed with pictures).

You don't need gauges before you get your car tuned. The tuner's computer will be able to monitor everything.

Driving an 04+ WRX with a TBE and no-tune is not a good thing to do. I take it you're going to do an open source instead of a Cobb tune?

I don't think a pillar pod gets in the way of the airbag anymore than the pillar itself does. It would suck to catch a boost gauge to the face if you get in an accident.

WRXboy, I have no proof, so take it for what it is, but I looked through quite alot of forums to find that on the stock intercooler on the 09's you can't run more than 18 PSI without the plastic ends cracking or coming loose in places. I have run right on 18 PSI with the AP stage II Cobb map for quite some time, but I don't race at the track or anything. I just get on it quite a bit =D If you get a new top mount IC then your turbo is able to handle 24 PSI I believe, but you wouldn't make use of that unless you upgrade the fuel system (i.e. pump, rails, injectors).

I hear ya about the pillar pods man, I like the looks of those as well, but as you said it wasn't a good spot for the gauges. The airbag will still deploy, but you risk the expensive gauges getting slammed and possibly going through the windshield. Depending on how many gauges you are going to put in, the clock delete looks pretty good. I personally have moved toward the newer smaller gauges that are being made. Still, I only have a boost gauge and it's on the steering column. I hope that helps a little!

If I get in an accident that requires my side air bags to go off, there are a lot more issues to worry about then my two gauges being broken along with my windshield... My way of looking at it at least. Plus the way the airbag comes out of the pillar, it's just a small rectangular area towards the top that shoots out towards the window, not out like you guys are thinking... Look at the pictures on that link, they show it pretty clearly.

Yeah, that link seems to have the way to go for the pillar gauges for sure! Nice link Chris. Also, depending on how many gauges you plan on installing might help dictate where you want to mount them. 2 or more would justify the pillar pods for sure IMO, but to each his own. Good luck making up your mind!

Only thing up in the air is if they fit the WRX (they're made for the STi) and finding a color to match the existing trim, unless he can match the WRX interior rather than the STi. I sent him an email and I'll let ya know what he says.

Thanks everybody! All of that advice and tips really helped me out alot. I have seen that link of the pillar pods and was considering them, just have to buy the gauges first lol. If I take my car to the tuner to turn the boost up to 18psi and get the car tuned, would it stay at 18psi after the tune, or will it have the potential to spike over that and as mentioned above, that extra boost could crack parts of the IC. If that is the case, I will probably run 16-17psi instead to be extra safe and tune the car with my TBE and just wait to turn the boost up to 20-22psi once I upgrade the turbo and TMIC. Thanks again everybody!!
