I'm thinking he's saying the car won't run like crap without a tune. As the Agency Power intake required a tune to run correctly. I'm sure the AEM intake could benefit from a tune as well.
It requires no tuneing , and I dont own a sti.......why would I have gains like that ? I dont think there is much more than a hp or two .
You got it TURMIC!
The only problem I have with it , is the filter goes way down in the fender and could suck in water , so I bought a filter cover that is water repellent and is made by INJEN .
Let's get one thing straight, I am not someone who rattles off imaginary facts from my head. I only stated those numbers based on what I have read so far on it. I don't mean to sound like I have a stick in my ass or anything but I try my best not to mislead anyone on the board. Here is one of many product descriptions that state these alleged gains and backed with dynos I might add
Not ragging on you. But everyone inflates numbers to get you to buy stuff. All you have to do is shit tune....do a dyno run. Then do a good tune and dyno run it. Thus amazing results. Oh well...I doubt it adds 36 hp and 35 lbs of torque though. Heck the 09s imprezia 2.5 GT to the wrx don't even quite have that type of result and it was a exhaust adjustment and turbo upgrade between the two. The intake isn't that big of a choke point...is what i'm getting at.
I'm not konocking at you , or judgeing , all the intake does is get that great spooling sound and rbv blow off sound keeping it with oem specs and not hurting the car , I will have to get a base dyno to see if it did do anything at all , but I have other mods to do before I hit up a dyno . I'm like every tuner out and about , seeing is believeing , just like you .
You know, there are actual facts out there. SCC did a write-up on the 08 WRX bolt ons when it first came out. They did exhaust, intake, and tuning separately and together on an otherwise stock WRX. The intake made almost 10whp without tuning and if I'm not mistaken, it was a pre-release version of AEM's intake.
The 08 WRX is much more similar to the 05+ LGT than it is the 02-07 WRX. In other words, it has the legacy's crappy intake instead of the earlier WRX's essentially factory developed CAI. Point is unlike earlier years, there's power to be made with the intake alone.
36hp with tuning when you're talking bhp instead of whp may not be that far off...
i installed this intake 400 miles ago, no issues, just smiles. i measured the diameter of the stock and AEM intake and they are the same, AEM even uses the same flow straightener that Subaru does. AEM has advantage since it doesnt make a 90 degree turn before entering the MAF tube like the stock does. it is quite possible that the hp gains are the same as the claimed gains for the WRX. remember the ~36hp gains were on the STI. and the air is definitely colder. speaking to subaru mechanic experienced with high performance WRX/STI the only thing we need to make sure of is to make sure the MAF o-ring is not cut or leaking (this can throw CEL and can lean engine).
my question for you expert techs, COBBs intake for the previous models worked with their OTS maps. since this AEM intake mimics the stock one shouldnt this work with COBBs OTS maps? thanks for the input. and i hope this info helps every one else who is considering this intake.
blackrex13, this really really matters if we're talking about the 08 or the 02-07 because the intakes are substantially different.
The 02-07 have a MUCH better intake right from the factory and one that does not have a 90 degree bend right before the maf. It's capable of far more hp than the more recent intake. A lot of the intakes for the 02-07 had a variety of problems (including the AEM unit) including adding in new bends, changing the maf position, and/or changing the diameter. This is why so few intakes can be utilized without tuning on the 02-07 wrx/sti and there are some, even by traditionally sold brands, that aren't even good WITH tuning.
The 08 on the other hand has a pretty junky intake. The path like you said has sharp turns. Almost anything you stick on there is going to be better as long as the stock diameter is the same.
And I'm no expert tech, take my thoughts for what they are. Ramblings of an enthusiast, not a mechanic.
There's tune shops in maryland. I'd just skip the AP and get yourself a custom tune at a tune shop. Throw on the intake, exhaust, baby the car down there staying out of boost, and let them maximize what it's got.
FYI, with the SPT intake and exhaust, my dealer said no tune was require. The AEM is nearly identical to the SPT one. Throw on the CAI and an exhaust and don't look back.
On the other hand, I went opensource for tuning, and am running an XPT map. With my homemade AEM knock-off and a good 15psi map, I'd estimated I'm making nearly 300HP at the crank as I sit. With the SPT exhaust I have coming, I expect about 10-15HP more. The 2008 sedans have a HORRIBLE exhaust and intake system. Never thought I'd be running over 300hp with only about a $700 investment.

Are you sure you are making 70hp with an intake and a tune?... and 10-15 more hp? That tune isn't that aggresive either..
