The stock intake is very good at generating laminar flow. Even maintaining the stock pipe that attaches to the MAF (like with a short ram) can screw up airflow which can cause problems. Subaru's intake is actually pretty fancy. It gives good flow through a standard filter, pulls in good cold air, AND uses piping to smooth out the airflow very well. It's not a bad piece of engineering really, too bad most kids just want to rip it out with something that "looks cool"
