stilletto's '11 WRX Sedan
Among the teens of cars, something like fourteen in six years, I've owned these past few years, I've never owned a Subaru.
..that changed this past Monday. Picked up an '11 DGM WRX Sedan. So sick.

Was honestly in the market for a '13 Subaru BRZ, or '13 Honda Civic Si, but ran across this thing staring out the window of a VW Dealership in Downtown Chicago. Couldn't say "No".
Car was traded in for something larger by an older gentleman, and only had 21k Miles on it. Bone Stock upon purchase. Only other AWD vehicles I've driven have been my previous Automatic '98 Eclipse GSX and a friends '12 VW Golf R. ..prefer the WRX over both.

Only downside so far is a loud "squealing", similar to a bad accessory belt, that seems to be coming from the turbo when revving between 2500-3000rpm. Almost specifically at 2900rpm.
Thought it was the belts at first, as VW sprayed whatever crap grease/shine all over the engine bay during their prep while I was signing paperwork, but I removed the ALT/PS Belt the next day, and cleaned it along with the pulleys, but no change. Noise is most noticeable at said rpm, and after the car's been warmed up.

Aside from this small issue, which may be large, I'm super pumped to own this car, and can't wait to dive deeper into the Subaru Community. Thanks in advance for what I'll learn.

It's possible that one or both of your accessory belts might be a bit loose. There should be two bolts on each - one adjusts the tension and one locks the mechanism in place. There should only be about an inch of play on the longest straight part of each belt if I remember correctly.

Welcome to the forum too, by the way.

Car's back from the Dealership. Supposed "Loose Exhaust Hanger" that was causing the noise..
Regardless, the issue's been resolved, and I haven't heard any "squealing" these past couple of hours.

Weird. Hopefully that solves your problem!

Been driving all day, and no strange noises. Hope it stays that way.

Just ordered a Kartboy Short Shifter and Bushing Combo.
Can't wait until it gets here. The OEM Shifter's just nasty.

stilletto 06-21-2013 01:52 PM

Short Shifter and Bushings arrived in the mail today, hoping to have them installed some time in the next few weeks. No days off. Sucks.

Next goal is to figure out which fluids to use. Thinking Amsoil 0W-30 Signature Series Engine Oil, but dunno' what to go with as far as Transmission Fluid or Gear Oil.

5w30 oil is what it's designed for.

A lot of people will tell you to stick with the exact fluid subaru uses for the drivetrain components Subaru "Extra S" think it's 75w90.

man show 06-21-2013 06:38 PM

Agreed, stick with 5w-30 for engine oil.

Personally, I use the Andrewtech Cocktail for the trans and Motul Gear 300 for the rear diff.

Avoid Uncle Scotty's Cocktail at all costs (it turns acidic).

Installed the Short Shifter, minus the Bushings, and I can already feel a huge difference.
It's gonna' take a bit to get used to, pretty tough sliding into first, but its better. Only thing that pissed me off was that damn snap ring. Even with the right tools, took like an hour to get back into place. Ugh.

Never mind the extra force needed to shift into gear.. I tightened the through bolt down way too much. Was causing binding. Everything's good now!

stilletto 06-23-2013 10:37 AM

Ordered a Flossy RedHead Heavy-Weight Shift Knob. Can't Wait!

So do you know when the gear fluid was changed last?

No clue, but it'll be done within the next couple of weeks.
Just changed the oil this morning with GC 0W-30. Good stuff.

Installed my Flossy RedHead Heavy-Weight Shift Knob. Shifts like butter now, and weighing over a pound, it better.
Communication was great, shipping was fast, and the quality is top notch. Engraving isn't exactly center when the knob is tightened down, but that's probably due to the Shift Boot Retainer I had them press in. Nothing a small nut can't/won't fix. Love this thing.
