New to the site 2012 WRB WRX

Hey everyone. I'm new to the site. This is my first WRX and I'm loving it :D. Already have a small list of things done, as I've only had the car for a year. I am looking forward to making more modifications as time goes on. I look forward to the help I will receive and learning about these beasts. Thank you in advance for your advice. I will post up some pictures later and a list of things that I have already done.

Things Done So Far

6 Attachment(s)
My WRX is base a model with only the fog light kit when purchased. After I had it for a few months I decided to take it in to have the SPT cat-back installed by the dealer. The rest of the things I've done myself. Here is a list of all the things that have been done since I've gotten it:

-SMY Gauge Cluster Pod
-SPT Boost Gauge
-SPT Cat-back Exhaust
-Window Tinted to 35% on all 4 doors and rear window
-SPT short shifter linkages
-Kartboy short shifter
-Kartboy rear shifter bushing
-Perrin front shifter bushing
-Factory 10" kicker trunk sub-woofer
-Factory red LED footwell illumination kit
-Factory xm radio kit
-Debadged trunk
-Door side moldings
-TWM Performance weighted shift knob
-Window rain deflectors

I know there isn't any real performance stuff here but I am trying to hold out until the warranty is up. So I've been trying to get things done that I want before then that doesn't affect it, that way when the warranty is up I can have the money focus on performance.

Thanks guys. I'm looking forward to my stay. I've been doing some research and I haven't found exactly what I'm looking for or I'm not in the correct spot, if I get an access port and go stage 1+ how does the longevity of the engine looking? If I kept stage 1+ for a long time am I safe, being that the tune is more of a generic tune or do I have to get a tune from a shop at some point to help longevity? I know I'm applying a little more power and things can break sooner and easier depending on how its driven. I know there are many opinions on the tune shop or access port, but like I said I would like to go stage 1+ for a long time if possible. Any help or direction to something that's already posted that I haven't found would be appreciated. I just want to relax my concerns. Sorry for such a long winded post but I was trying to get what I wanted out there. Thank you!

Obviously any map tweaking and you're looking at a loss in overall longevity of the engine blah blah blah lol! But seriously, a stage 1 tune is more than safe for a long period of time and better than the garbage base map without a doubt! If that's all you plan to do I'd say roll with an AP. A stage 1 tune whether with an AP or without is a better choice than leaving it on the stock map IMO.

I've gotta say though, I doubt a stage 1 will keep the mod bug at bay. It bites hard and as soon as you feel the difference you're gonna want more lol!

Anything after a stage 1 tune I'd honestly recommend pro tuning and would bypass the AP unless no tuner around you tunes without it...which I highly doubt. there's more of a noticeable difference between base and stage 1 though than there is from stage 1 to 2 so maybe you'll be happy with the OTS stage 1 AP map.

Put some long thought into what you want out of the car. The purchase of an AP depends on whether you wanna push over 300whp IMO. There's a lot of good things the AP does but it restricts a pro tunes capabilities and that alone makes it a no go for me.

Stage 1 cobb OTS map is probably better for your engine than the factory tune.

Def get rid of the lethal stock tune ASAP

So I'm understanding that the access port tune is better than factory, but if I kept stage 1 for the life of the car, and never change from stage 1 other than to take it back to the dealer for some reason which would then put it back to stock, that is completely okay? I have a cat-back right now, and may look into the cobb intake when i get the access port. I don't want to get in over my head, I want more but keep it more on the simpler side right now. I don't want to get the app and then if a few months have to get a pro tune for the same mods. I know i can do the access port with the intake on my own and be happy for a while. So pretty much I want cobb intake and access port for a good period of time without worry. Is it possibly to mess up the ringlands on a stage 1 tune with intake, or is that just more into stage 2? Also have read people are getting some knocking when when they install the app, is the TP tune better that than the access port?

NeverSummer 06-16-2013 11:19 AM

Ring lands fail on the stock tune! The odds of it happening to you aren't high. Don't flat foot ## car at low Rpms in such gears as 5 and 6. I know people and also read about stories where the ring lands fail on stock tune. It's either gonna happen or it's not regardless of staged tunes or stock tune. Stage 2 for cars is very safe as well. Don't fall into the group of thinking staging your car is gonna 100% cause ring land failure. There are 08 and 09 Wrx and STi running over 100k w a stage 2 and no issues.

I also don't rec a TP Etune. Eric caused my good friends plugs to foul at 9k on the car. Brand new car, fouled plugs.

So the access port stage 1 is pretty much all I need at this point and it will be safe for a long time, and that's what I want. What would I do if I installed it and started getting a knocking from the engine? So you know of people running cobbs stage 2 maps for 100k miles without issue, did they get pro tunes at some point or straight cobb generic maps?
