careercadaver's thread...My 01 RS
After Searching for the past few months, I located my 2001 Impreza RS Sedan in Aspen White. Many plans for this one but I'm still doing my research before I jump into anything.

Plans will include turbo and likely and engine/drivetrain swap. Here's where she sits now, pretty much bone stock, unmolested...

Current Mods:

- Bakemono Mesh Fog Light Covers
- JDM Tails
- CNT Catback
- Cobb CAI
- WRX Limited Interior

- OEM 3 Piece Bugeye Front Lip
- Rear Spats (not yet installed)
- Tints
- Stereo and heavy Dynamat
- Aerogueards (not yet installed)
- Rims and a Drop in Spring
- Clear Sidemarkers, Corners and Front Signal Lights
- Wheels, something with an agressive offset
- Turbo or and engine swap...time will tell.

I've really just been driving the car, I think Ive put over 1000 miles on it in just a few weeks. Enjoying the car...cant wait to mod this thang!

My previous car was an IS300 w. lots of mods, here's a few pics:

Installed my JDM tails the other day! Spats will be the next install.

Looking to powdercoat my stock rims this weekend or next, along with new rubber. Thinking graphite for the rims but I'm open to suggestions!

Picked these up for after powdercoating:

Nice looking RS. I only suggest you do an engine swap before turbo'ing the car. Those N/A motors dont really stand up to boost that well at all. But good luck with the project.

^^Yeah, leaning toward the same but as I have an engine that I'm going to build up. Putting turbo on the RS set-up was more to learn about boost as this is my first car that will have it. If I do turbo the RS 2.5 I plan to run conservatively (5lb)...if possible. lol

I have heard and read that at about 8PSI (and of course it depends on turbo size and all also) is the limit of an RS block. But if you do want to learn and go from there (and money isnt too big an issue) its not that bad of an idea.

Good call on the JDM tail light swap - they look much better than the stockers. I always really enjoyed the look of the first generation Imprezas. Maybe the 5th generation Impreza will take some styling cues from it.

^^Thanks man. Some days I wish I lived in Japan. This is the second car I've swapped tails for JDM

I've read about the same in reference to the stock internals, some say 8 and others 10. This is my DD so I'm not looking to go too extreme until I have a block built. Turbo is also very hard on 2nd gear in the RS I guess I'm 80% likely to loose it. Either way I don't plan to run ths set-up long.

Yeah me too.. I actually just did the 04/05 tail light swap on my 07 WRX along with the "JDM" tail light mod where you rearrange the location of the parking/brake light bulbs so they light up similar to how they do in Japan. The main difference is the round circles become the parking lights - I think it looks pretty cool.

Nice RS.

Jon: wheres the pics?

Sounds legit. !Thumbs Up

It's not just some theoretical boost number. There are dozens of other reasons to avoid boosting an EJ251. The compression is way too high, the fuel system is anemic, the head gasket can't take it, the manifolds are too small, SOHC, etc etc etc. It's an N/A car built to be an N/A car by a company that knows the difference. It's not some honda or toyota motor they just stripped off the turbo option for the US and raised the compression some for fuel efficiency.

That, and you can get a used EJ205 in great shape with a turbo and intercooler for <$1,500 so why bother?

careercadaver 10-14-2010 09:39 AM

I have a 205 shortblock lying around. I planned on building this for a swap and was just going to make sure most of the turbo parts would transer over to the next set-up, if I do. I've considered just waiting till it's built for all of the reasons listed above. Thanks for your input, I know there's no longevity with boosting the 2.5L.

mosc 10-14-2010 10:29 AM

EJ205 shortblock isn't a very useful part IMHO. You need the entire top end of the motor, the short block is worthless. If you had a full EJ205, many would tell you to get an EJ255 shortblock anyway and make a hybrid out of it. The valuable part of the EJ205 motor from your perspective is everything BUT the shortblock. Hope that makes sense...

So Mosc, is this the same kind of situation as a WRX owner trying to swap in an STi block...that being, it's much easier to keep Ej205 heads on it? Does someone in his situation want stock heads from this gen impreza, or do newer 205 stock heads work or what?

mosc 10-15-2010 12:36 AM

EJ205 heads work. The car is MAF like the 02-05 WRX and the ECU is a similar 16-bit system with a similar harness. Ideally you'd want the wiring harness and the ECU from the donor car but I've seen people make it work with the RS stuff. Note that the RS ECU is a bitch to flash unlike the later models. One guy in Minnesota kept a modified EJ251 shortblock along with EJ205 everything else making a far less popular but cheap/workable 2.5L hybrid.

You should chat with the guys on the RS forums. Several of em have some hands on experience with stuffing turbos under their old hoods. EJ205's are real popular in that croud because of price and compatibility.
