Timing sprocket

I have a 2002 wrx. I was driving and had a timing sprocket shoot through the timing cover, while the engine was running. Is this a common issue and what could the damage be? I have only had the car a few months. I will be pulling the engine but this is my first subie so was wondering what should be expecting. I have attached a picture of the gear (not the actual one) and where it came out of. Any help would greatly appreciated. Thanks.
