tapping in my valve train

a guy the other day said it sounded like i had some tapping. im not too up to speed on stuff like that. its an 05 sti.

when he said that his buddy said "thats what a boxer engine sounds like, its not off"

I'm sure everybody who reads this thread is probably going to say lifter tick, which is normal and since your car is stock (no mods listed in your profile) it's probably not the downpipe making the noise. I had a tapping with my car that got progressively worse and it turned out to be a cracked flange on my aftermarket uppipe.

ya im modless. :( thanks alot though man.

Grimm I think I got the same tick. Just got the car too.

So, in an otherwise unmodded car, 9 out of 10 times is lifter tick? Whats the fix, new lifters? Are there revised or aftermarket lifters?

I knew the damn noise was coming from my valvetrain.

chances are there's nothing wrong with your lifters. the ticking sound is a characteristic of these boxer engines, especially when they first start up.

It's cam tick. Any car with an overhead cam will do this. My titan did it as well. Just ours is a little louder.

i dont think its due to an over head cam.... maybe more prone to doing it but i have defintley seen in block cam lifters make a shit load of niose.....

Lucas synthetic oil stabilizer works for me. Quite's down the tick. It is $10 a bottle. I put one in instead of a quart of of castrol and it works beautifully.
