How to get to hex bolt on cam?
so I am changing my timing belt on my 06 wrx and when I was going to use my 10mm hex socket to adjust the timing on the first cam (top driver side) I noticed my cams look nothing like anybody else's from what all of the pictures I've seen on the internet.

How do I get to the Hex bolt on this cam or is there a special tool i have to use to turn this cam?

never mind. I am an idiot. just take out those three gold screws on the center cover. blah.

why are you having to adjust the cams, you should have clamped them in place?

You are right. I should have clamped them in place, but i was following the 2006 subaru service manual and it didn't advise on doing that. So when the timing belt went off both the intake and exhaust cam went spinning.

If i keep my car for another 80k miles I will totally do that next time. lol Live an learn.

you will definitely want to do a leak down test now to ensure that you didn't do any valve damage

Thanks for the input Basco. Just curious, why do you believe there would be valve damage? If I turned the crank to TDC before removing the timing belt isn't the side that the cams that are under pressure have one cylinder intake valve open, on the other cylinder exhaust cam closed, and the pistons at mid stroke?

I am still going to do the leak down test per your suggestion, but I want to gain a better understanding how it could be damaged. I just like knowing how things work.

if both cams spun around then the valves hit each other
