Engine swap questions

Hey everyone I'm new to the Subaru scene. I recently bought a 2003 Subaru WRX drove it for about 5 months perfectly fine nothing wrong than all the sudden developed a rod knock one morning. So I contacted Tiger Japanese about getting a engine replacement they didn't have any from 2002-2007 but they have some engines from a 1993-1998 an said that I can use just the short block so questions are 1. Can I really use the block? 2. Would everything else as far as heads bolting up still be the same? 3. Has anyone ever done this before? Only reason I want to just replace the engine rather than rebuild it is because I DD this wrx an don't have the time to rebuild the engine. PLEASE HELP

Thanks Dan

Or you can just buy a new EJ205 block.

You should be able to still buy the NEW short block from Subaru directly.

Contact your local dealership or visit your preferred online dealer (We don't stock them but can special order them from Subaru if you like).

Your dealership is conning you. I'm assuming that price includes all the gaskets etc. Even then it's WAY too high. $2,000 for EJ205 block and gasket kit all day long. And there is no core charge for it.

WRX EJ205 Shortblock

Subaru Master Gasket Kit for 2002 - 2005 WRX EJ205 (2.0L)

Proof of $2,000 cost. Tell your dealership to match that. If they don't make sure everyone knows they are thieves.

Hell, this one is $150 cheaper.

SHORT BLOCK for SUBARU |10103AB330

I'd be ringing the general manager's phone off the hook if someone quoted me $2,700 + a nonsensical core charge.

You do realize that will require some tuning due to the higher compression ratio?

You realize this is a downgrade right? And will need extra work?
