Engine rebuild 2004 WRX

My son's 2004 WRX (automatic) broke a rod with only 59,000 miles on the car. Look like number 1 rod, and crankshaft are crap....possibly block is damaged from the rod breaking too.

Where can I find a good used 2.0l engine to replace it? Or would it be better to buy a new block and add better internals? Would a stroker kit make sense?

Car is OEM stock except for Perrin exhaust system.

well at this point you have a crossroads infront of you IMO. Do you want to go back with a US Spec 2.0L block?? Or since your halfway there already, switch over to a JDM Spec 2.0L
or a US Spec STi Block and Tranny? Personally, I would go for the STi Block and Trans. swap, but thats just me and I dont know anyones financial situation.

As long as it's broke i'd go with a usdm sti 2.5l shortblock. They go for between 1500-2000. JDM motors are nice, but they are also pricey.

+1 to the 2.5l block, stock internals unless you have budget to upgrade pistons, etc. Stroker kit not needed though..

the block should be fine, you may just need to resleve the cylinder that the rod broke in. I'd do a 2.2 stroker, with and sti crank and rods.

251.3 WHP
235.8 WTQ

If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing

Agree... This might be the most cost efficient way to go if you are not affraid of the rebuilding work.
Also, check out these guys. They can source jdm parts for relatively cheaper than others.
You have to emial them or call for a faster responce: JDMSPECC4U.COM -- USED JDM STI PARTS AND ACCESSORIES
