Building the Motor

for the 06 WRX with 2.5L, at what horsepower level do I need to consider building the motor?
Currently running perrin dp, HKS exhaust APS top mount IC and K&N typhoon with Ecutek reflash at 302 whp. I am upgrading the clutch next, but was planning on saving to build the motor prior to new turbo and FMIC and fuel upgrades......good idea?

I would think about building the tranny first that build the motor. Get some gears or go for sti tranny but i think geting gears is cheaper and better.

dont upgrade the clutch unless you upgrade gearsets.

upgrade gears or go with a 6-speed.

Wait, 302whp on a stock turbo?

Do you have an STI?

previous statements are exactly correct, motor work should be the last thing on your list to invest in. i would go turbo first/supporting fuel mods. then suspension or brake mods, then save for tranny work/ clutch&drivetrain. and last motor work, because as stated many times before our engines being 2.0 or 2.5 tend to be the strongest point of our cars.

if you wanted to go big with your turbo id go like this:
em
suspension
brakes
transmission
save
save
save
save
save
engine, turbo, supporting mods and fuel all at once so you dont buy a turbo and injectors then go through everything else and decide you want bigger and get a bigger turbo and then need new injectors, its a waste of money.

I'm still not seeing where you're pulling 302whp out of the stock turbo.

Ijust read my post and oops.....i didnt mean 302whp.....I meant 302 bhp........I just looked at my dyno sheet and its 281whp.....so if my end goal is is to end up with a FMIC, APS sr40 turbo fuel rail/injectors/ etc. upgrade tranny first?...I am trying to determine how much the stock internals can handle before they need to be replaced.

I see some cars in mags and on the forums that push 350 whp with a clutch upgrade only, but most of them are STi's. the stock sti tranny is beefier than the stock WRX I suppose?

the stock sti tranny is completely different than the wrx. the magic number on the wrx tranny is 300whp. that is the number where you will have a big chance of breaking your trans. the sti tranny can hold 400+ whp if i am not mistaken.
with that setup you wont need to worry about building the ej25 up too much. maybe pistons/rods and arb studs. i may be wrong though.

HP does not break transmissions. Torque does and the stock 6-speed is capable of 550wtq.

true. Where did you get that number ? Not challenging you, I'm just curious where you read it at etc. And at that torque number..... is that the maximum it can hold safely or is that just a recommended " don't go over this " number ?

hes running a wrx 5-speed not a sti......have fun with a car with 400whp and stock torque. if your gonna build the engine the transmission goes right along with it unless you have an sti and that still has its limits as you said.

big valley's sti puts out 700+ whp w/the stock tranny but i'm not sure of his torque #'s, and from what i've read it's the torque that kills.
