Night TSD Rally this Sat 11/19 in Mount Kisco NY (Westchester)
Westchester Sports Car Club is having its "Turkey Tour" rally this Sat night, their last for the season. Registration is from 5 to 6pm at the Applebees in Mount Kisco. First car out (leaves in registration number order) from the new Target parking lot in back of Applebees at 7pm. Cars leave in one minute increments. Figure its about 3 hours of backroads driving in the dark on roads you've never seen before. This is a Time/Speed/Distance rally on public roads for a driver and navigator. All you need is a pen and something to write on a lap (like a clipboard or a thin hardcover book), and some kind of nightlight to read the rally directions. You can drive tame and careful and go for points (I've seen familys in SUVs get decent scores) but everytime you make a wrong turn or get lost and need to backtrack a few instructions you need to haul ass to get back "on course" where you're supposed to be.

Here is a primer on what a TSD rally is:

Here is the event flier with more info:

I'm trying to get as many people I know together to register consecutive numbers and use CBs so we can talk car-to-car as we pass and crisscross paths on the road (cells and pulling over are a PITA).

Any questions, just ask.

when's the next rally?

The next WSCC rally is not until Easter (the "Bunny Run"). I was looking around for other clubs and I did find a rally this weekend but it seems to be more of a scenic drive around and not really something where you are competing for trophys. Every club has its own spin on a rally some are just fun cruises around and some are very competitive.

I'm new to this kind of thing. Do they block off the course for the time it is scheduled since it is public roads, and people will most likely be speeding? I may just have to take a road trip up there when the time comes ;)

I guess you didnt read this post:
Here is a primer on what a TSD rally is:

These are on public roads for 60 to 90 miles. Nothing is closed off. No police are notified (except at the start where there is a big drivers meeting and the club has "I tripped and I'm suing your ass" insurance).

Technically you are not supposed to speed. Even if you make a wrong turn you are supposed to use a slow section (where the average speed is less than the speed limit) to increase your speed over a long period. However you can hit a checkpoint at any moment (you never know if there is more than one final checkpoint, there could be many, at any point in the rally) so if you dont want crappy points for that leg of the rally you haul ass to get back to your average time.

If you happen to get pulled over by the man, its your problem. Just like if someone gives you directions to their house and you get pulled over telling the cop "but I have these directions and I'm late so I decided to speed so I wouldnt be late to meeting my friend". You'd be a lot dumber to tell a cop you were in some kind of rally, then you're just asking for extra tickets.

In the 5 years I've been doing rallys, I have not heard of one car getting a speeding ticket. I've been shot with radar maybe 2 or 3 times ever and it was always on a big public road being used to get from one small road to another small road. I drive like a maniac and I was at or close to the limit because I knew I was on a main road in a town and would be on a dark nasty twisty road in a minute where I could open up and make up some time.
