02 Brake Job

Hi i recently aquired a 02 WRX and it needs a rear brake job. Im planning on using centric premium rotors with akebono ACT pads and replace the wheel bearings, the car has 131k on it. How much time/effort is it to do this? would i have to bake the new rotor to get the new bearing in there??? Im planning on doing the front soon too? Anyone used the brembo blank rotors?? The cryo-stops look good, i'd paint the hat on the brembo's due to rusting issues, the centrics and cryo's have a powder coat on em to prevent rust. What rotors do yall reccommend using on the front? the rear doesn't take much abuse so i skimped on the rotors lol

Hi guys. After thinking about what car I'm going to get for myself, I've made a decision of getting a used WRX wagon. I've always loved how the wagon looks. I have read about wrx owners are very happy with their cars. Excelling in both performance and in reliability. Although I have heard a couple of complaints about the car that worries me abit. I joined here in hoping that I would be able to get these things cleared.

I have read somewhere that wrx engines have a head gasket design flaw where there's a leak that eventually causes engine failure. I want to know if its true or not and if it is, are there ways to inspect for it or if theres an aftermarket product that will resolver this issue.

Next one is that I would like some help in picking a used one. Unfortunately, I am only able to afford a used car at this time of hardship. So the ones I have seen that I can afford almost always reaches 100k+ miles on them. At this mileage, Should i be worried about the car not having enough miles on them before it starts breaking down major parts? I know that wrx's are generably reliable and it totally depends on how well the car has been taken car of. But every car has its limits. If i do happen to buy one that has more than 100k miles on it, what should i look out for that should have been done by the previous owner?

Thanks for the help in advance guys. I really do look forward to be a WRX owner. I feel so damn excited.

Hello all!!! I am a big time car guy. I have had many different makes and model cars over the years. I currently own a '06 Corvette Z06. I am looking to add a DD to the mix. I am looking at a new '10 WRX Hatch. I have test driven both it and the STI and feel for my needs the WRX is right for me. I have a few questions...
I hear the tranny is very weak. I dont plan on modding it powerwise.. maybe some on the suspension. What should I avoid to make sure the tranny stays healthy. I might take it down the 1/4 a few times a year.... I realize powershifting wouldnt be a good idea, but would I need to take it real easy?

Is there any thing else I should know about the car? It seems like one fun ride!!!

Thanks for any help!!

Looking to buy a ej20k swap in a 95 Subby

So, long time troll, first time poster. I have been seriously looking into a 9-2x (the wrx rebadge) but this caught my eye. I am very interested in this car for numerous reasons, mostly the price. I would be able to get the car for $3000. Only problem? A few. So I will start off with the general info of the car then move onto the problems.

From his listing: "The motor has about 53,000 miles on it, and recently did an oil change. It runs great, just needs a good tune.It is only run on a stock turbo so it can be upgraded for more power, also I didn't get around to getting headers yet so that is also holding back a lot of air flow that can be released.

The good: Engine runs great, car is quick but with some after market headers and a tune it has the potential to be a lot faster, the car is sitting on 05 wrx rims.

The bad: The paint was recently primed so the texture is rough (it is ready for paint tho), the front driver side fender was bent in and i bent it back out but it sticks out a little, one of the rims on it hit a curb so it broke the edge, so its on one donut at the moment, engine does eat a little oil (seen in a lot of turbo engine oils).

After market parts: Up pipe, down pipe, full cat back system, front mount intercooler, manual perrin boost controler, nrg ground wires system and nrg electronic stabilizer, apexi short ram intake, i can't remember anything else at the moment. You can come by and check it out if you want." He emailed me today saying he can lower the price to 3k and enclosed this as well "the turbo is going out so its making a rattling noise from the fins."

So I have a few questions and concerns for all you Subby Gear Heads!

1. Based on what he has said, is that the turbo going out? A fix would be as simple as getting new headers and a bigger turbo? [Main Worry]
2. How realistic is it that all Subby's burn oil? Is that a worry?
3. Is the price right at 3k?
4. Is it drivable home? 25 miles about
5. Anything specific I should look for other than usual stuff when looking at it?

I appreciate all the help and look forward to being and active member :)

Hey guys whats up? Im looking to purchase either a 08 WRX or 09 WRX but have been reading that the 09 has significant HP differences then the 08. So my question is, is the 08 upgradeable to the 09 for the price difference between the two which is about 4-5K? And exaclty what the differences are?

Hey, I may be posting in the wrong section but for some reason I did not see a "For Sale" section of the forum? I have a 2007 WRX . I bought it with 10K miles on it but it had some dealer installed "ADR" wheels on it and I really would like to put the stock wheels on it. The ADR's look nice but I just wanted to keep it stock (in appearance). I see that most of WRX tuners do a lot of major upgrades and was wondering if anyone knew of or had any stock 07 wheels for sale? OEM from dealer are just to much $$. I have attached a pic showing what came on the car. I have the sticker add on from the dealer (Gilman Houston) that said they were installed at dealer. Any ideas?

STi Conversion Questions

This is my first post, so I hope I've hit the appropriate site and area. Sorry for the length but I wanted to make sure I painted a full picture :)

I'm looking to perform an engine swap / conversion and have some choices to make.

My current vehicle:
* 2001 Subaru Legacy GT Limited
* 4 speed auto
* 16" alloy rims

The option I was provided by Planet Motorsport in Guelph, ON
* 98 WRX STi 2.0L JDM Engine @ 285 hp - "low mileage"
* Intake, engine, exhaust, drivetrain, DCCD, brembo brakes
* 5 or 6 Speed manual swap

Reason:
* Headgasket failure in 2001 N/A engine - 200,000+ km

Goal:
* $12,000 - $15,000 price range
* Daily Driver, including winter
* Somewhat of a sleeper, it should be all go not so much show
* Med-Quiet on the highway, don't care if it's a little loud when I step on it though

I'm going to be hard on this car, plain and simple. On my way to work daily there are some gravel roads that I take (shorter distance, fewer cars, more fun). I live in an area where there can be lots of snow.

5 vs 6 speed:
* From what I've heard, I should avoid 5 speed and go with 6 speed as it will die the way I will use it. Research has lead me to believe this will be the first thing to go even with all other stock WRX parts (including clutch). I'm prepared to spend more if this is a sure-fire breaking point.

Engine:
* Are there any concerns with 98 2.0L STi JDM Engines? I have been searching for awhile and not found anything concrete one way or the other for this specific engine. I'm most concerned if it is one with a known head gasket issue (98' DOHC appears to be the affected). I've heard the 2.0 L blocks are bullet proof.

* Can the Engine be mapped? I'm interested in launch control and stage upgrades via mapping changes. I've seen on Cobb tuning launch control is available for 2.5 L (CobbTuning.com - 06/26/07 - Launch Control (Subaru 2.5L) (http://www.cobbtuning.com/info/?ID=3321)). They also only seem to have WRX 2002+.

* I have heard that light-weight (not under driven) pulley's make it harder to drive in the snow. I was hoping to use Group A light-weight pullys to increase low end torque (Group A Subaru Performance Products - Pulleys (http://groupa.ca/PR_pulleys.html)). Does it really cause that much extra difficulty?

Other things I have considered:
* Anti-sway bars - too stiff of ride when on gravel or rough roads?
* Cold Air / K&N intakes - will this kill low end torque, or be balanced by light-weight pullys?
* Will 16" rims fit brembo breaks or will I need to upsize to 18"?
* Is there a mechanism for the parking break to disengage rear wheel drive? I know WRC cars do this but can't find info for STi's
* Front mount vs top mount intercooler - major advantages / disadvantages?
* Skid Plates? - will this offer protection from gravel, or am I just being overly cautious?
* End links? Group A Subaru Performance Products - End Links (http://groupa.ca/PR_end_links.html)
* Stroker kits? - this may become expensive

Anything I haven't considered? Any recommendations for changes to this plan?

All input is welcome, this site seems like it holds many knowledgeable members. I grew up loving to drive but never having influences on working on cars. I've only started to learn in the last few years on my own... and I know I've got a lot left to learn :)

Thanks for your input!

I'm looking to perform an engine swap / conversion and have some choices to make.

My current vehicle:
* 2001 Subaru Legacy GT Limited
* 4 speed auto
* 16" alloy rims

The option I was provided by Planet Motorsport in Guelph, ON
* 98 WRX STi 2.0L JDM Engine @ 285 hp - "low mileage"
* Intake, engine, exhaust, drivetrain, DCCD, brembo brakes
* 5 or 6 Speed manual swap

Reason:
* Headgasket failure in 2001 N/A engine - 200,000+ km

Goal:
* $12,000 - $15,000 price range
* Daily Driver, including winter

I've seen on Cobb tuning launch control is available for 2.5 L (CobbTuning.com - 06/26/07 - Launch Control (Subaru 2.5L)). They also only seem to have WRX 2002+.

* I have heard that light-weight (not under driven) pulley's make it harder to drive in the snow. I was hoping to use Group A light-weight pullys to increase low end torque (Group A Subaru Performance Products - Pulleys).

Group A Subaru Performance Products - End Links

Thanks for your input!

hey guys and girls, I am in need of information. I have not been yet blessed with the gratitude of owning my own WRX, but am in the market. I just was looking for some insight on what you guys think. This car will be a daily driver, but am looking for slight modifications. I am torn between a wagon and a sedan. I am looking for an '04 or newer, not that I dont like the bugeyes, I just like the newer ones just a little bit more. also, is there anything in particular I should look for when looking to purchase one? I have done minor research and have heard of problems with 4th? Any help would be appreciated!

Hello all, Im new to this forum and new to Subaru's but not new to forums in general...I'll behave. Im looking to buy my first WRX in the next week or so and I am looking for some advice from those that are more knowledgeable than myself. Heres the deal I have a $10,000 hard capped cash budget and a loan is not an option. My current car ('00 Buick Regal GS-supercharged) is on its last legs and is rapidly approaching 200k miles so I need to act fast...bad situation.

Anyways I have narrowed my search to two local cars and would really appreciate some advice. Im trying to find something as stock as possible as I don't need to get into someone elses hack job. They are as follows:

'03 WRX Sedan--$8500obo
silver
86xxx miles
Stick
Stock rims w/snows
17" aftermarkets
Blue/Black interior
MODS
Catback exhaust
Stereo(Dont care either way)

'04 WRX Wagon--$10,200obo but highly motivated seller-9500 is possible I think
black
83xxx miles
Stick
bones stock
premium sound (again dont care)

Which car would you go for and why? Both are in great shape both internally and out from what I've seen so far.

Also are their any problems that I should be looking for specifically to a WRX? Both glaringly obvious and something with deeper roots?

Thanks for reading and any/all help will be greatly appreciated and rewarded with pics of a new ride to me (and the forum):cool:

EDIT: THe catback exhaust on the sedan is a mod that I would make 100% on any WRX that I end up getting.

Hi guys, today i was changin my air filter and noticed one of my hair hose from the turbo (the one perpendicular to de T) was almost cut in half, after some research i found out that without that you car will run 17 psi which is too much and i felt the car runing richer and faster :) .....
well now i gotta go and get a new hose, whats up if i get a manual boost controller and intall it, can i set it up instead of 13psi(normal) to a lower boost like 0.8? will this increase my MPG? yes i kno the car will be slower but.... i do long trips once in a while? im a little new with MBC. sorry.

Hey folks, new owner of 2002 WRX looking to set up stage one:

Question: I like the Perrin catted downpipe, but would like to know if it will bolt on to the Borla twin tip cat back?

Anyone try this yet?

Also, would like to know if an aftermarket clutch kit would be required for the extra power...my plan is to open up the air flow with turbo back mod, and replace fuel pump for more fuel + cobb access port.

Will my stock clutch handle these mods?

Thanks!
