I understand the general sentiment here "Subaru makes weak parts" right? But get some perspective. If you look at the so called tough transmissions of the past like a GM turbo 350/400 or Ford C4/C6 you'll also notice they always appeared in RWD cars that could ususally smoke the tires off. And that's why they held up - something was able to break loose when heavily overstressed. With AWD there is very little to break loose and all that torque unleashed at once, well...something's got to give. For one example, my friend's cobra mustang trans held up fine until he started doing second gear launches on dry pavement. After a couple of times it said enough and snapped because the gearing advantage wasn't there and the tires gripped too well. Yes, there are transmissions that will handle it, but in any kind of car you have to pay up big for them, not just subies.
